Why don't these companies realize that it doesn't matter how cheap the toy is. If they laid off Mom and Dad to find cheaper labor in another country then who has the money to buy the product?!

And the Chinese made toys are, of course, the least expensive. Every time my hubby fishes some stuffed toy out of that crane machine at the bowling alley for the grandson I think about that. But I also reassure myself with the fact that the kid has so darned many toys -- and would really prefer to play with either water or tools -- that it's just going to go up on a shelf anyway.

I can say at work that we stopped giving out backpacks with toys in them last year and also aren't using toys in this years summer reading program prizes because there was an issue a number of months ago with lead in Chinese made toys.

My name is after Debbie Reynolds. In my forth grade there were 5 of us. The teacher had a different way of saying our name and you knew with Debbie she was talking to. lol

Well, there you go, I guess I see the world through rose colored glasses....it wouldn't occur to me to give away dirty clothes, etc. I always wash what I give away first. But I guess it makes sense from these companies perspective. I sometimes feel the same way when I go to garage sales- heck, I would throw it away before I would offer it for sale!

A lot of local charities stopped taking used toys awhile ago when there was the big lead scare. It was too difficult for them to tell where the toys had come from and it was a pain to test everything.

Not too many Debs named after Ms Kerr imo. That period in time was totally gaga over Debbie Reynolds and the Tammy movies and those two names hit the mainstream. Thank goodness you didn't get that Misty Harbor tacked on you, Deb!! Yikes! And when I was born, every girl had either Jane or Anne for a middle name. Later on in the "Jennifer" era, every girl got Marie for the middle one and then we had the big Jessica era. You're right about Caitlyn, Kaitlyn, Katelynn, etc. What...

Why don't companies give their used furniture away? lawsuits! why do banks which foreclose on a property not let nonprofits take the furniture out of the houses before they trash everything left there? lawsuits!

As far as why groups are asking for new clothing? I've heard tales of what comes in when people donate their used goods. Trash, moldy clothes, dirty clothes, it's utterly disgusting....

Oh my, Misty Harbor, that would have been tough. I was born in 1960. You're right I've never noticed anyone under 40 being a Deborah. My daughter's ex MIL and her best friend's mom are Debbie's too. But nowadays there sure a lot of Kaitlin's (or some variation of that). The other thing is, a lot of the Deborah's I know also have Anne for a middle name.

I don't know how old you are but I don't know a single Deb under 40. It must have been the name of the year. My mother had wanted to name me Misty Harbor (?!) so I am VERY happy with Deborah!

I see that now, yup, too many Deb's. My mom said when she named me that Debbie wasn't that popular (she named me after Deborah Kerr). In my high school Algebra class there were 4 of us.

Seems like it would be a simple tax law change to let companies write off donations....it is a shame that so much goes to waste.

My local Goodwill is not accepting toys anymore. I think it is in part because "we" have become a society willing to sue at the drop of a hat. All the food the high school cafeteria throws out for just that reason. Then again, my dh sees a lot of furniture...

Following up on Betsy's comments at the end of the other thread on the French Open, I watched that match too and I still don't know how it happened. Nadal didn't play badly really, I don't think, but somehow, point by point, he eventually lost. Beyond being sorry he won't get to meet Federer in the final, I really don't care for the guy who won. He was quite rude to Nadal...
