Kathy, if you are about 2/3 of the way through I'm not surprised you're losing interest -- I did at about the same point. Not sure why. I was glad I persevered just for the epilogue, though.

Actually, I'm not sure I'll be able to make chat today either. I foolishly pressed hubby about going to the Dragon Boat Races today not realizing when I did it that it was also chat day. I think I've gotten myself into something I can't easily get out of...

I'm driving somewhere today and thus won't be able to make the chat. Wish my mom would move closer and wasn't 7 hours away. Sigh. Hate driving that far in one go by myself. However, I have HP 7 on CD so will listen to them. Can't wait to read the log, hope I can follow it. lol

Jill's right, charging for a reserve would bankrupt me. I guess I'd have to find the most comfortable chair at a bookstore and read them there.

Speaking of the bookstore person, IMO she wasn't being snarky. She was a very nice person (she's the one who gave us the ARCs I mention in the TBR thread) and enjoyed talking about books. To tell you the truth, when I was there I was having a very difficult time finishing this book and I was only about 1/2 way through it....

You know, I have yet to visit my new town library. I'll have to put that on the list of things to do before I start the new job :)

Oh Angel's Game thread...I actually just started the second part so I won't finish in time for the chat. But, I wouldn't have made it anyway since we have a birthday party for my cousin's 2 year old! I'm moving quicker now though as the pace of the story seems to be picking up.

Didn't we have a discussion about that before? No... I read a discussion about it on the Librarians Who LibraryThing page. Apparently they do that in lots of places... I think you usually get to move up the line if you pay for your reserve.

Dating myself again, the libraries I worked in (before the computer age) used to charge $.25 for a reserve to notify you by mail that a book was now available. I reserve all my books now on the computer and at first I used to get an automated call telling me it was available (never mentioning the title due to privacy concerns). Now, they are starting to notify me by email.

My library used to charge for reserves but so many people complained that they stopped. Maybe a petition?

Wow Barb, they charge for reserves? That's a killer that would put Olle (among others) in the poor house. Have you checked the ABE website for used books? Often they'll have brand new books for under $5 plus shipping, but they include booksellers in your part of the globe. At $2 per reserve, it might be worth checking now.

I agree with Karen, she was being a be-atch snob. She has no idea how well-read you are and was probably corresponding your comment to those who say 'it had so many pages and so many big words' Phooey--you're right, she shouldn't be allowed to work in a place that should be encouraging, not imply classism.

To me literature means exceptionally thought out writing in style, word use, content and form. That no other has written like that before. Literature has to transcend what is trendy and be relevant to all ages in some way. That's what I think.

I think her comment was snobbish and condescending. A lot of what we read would fit that definition; this book was trying at points because the story lost its impetus and then thew it out again in a dozen or more directions. It took me longer than it might have because, when that happened, I lost the desire to read it, not because it's litrachure for heaven's sake.

Her definition of the term is lacking; she shouldn't be working in a bookstore.

I was in a bookstore and mentioned to the owner that this book was taking me awhile to read and she said, "That's because it's literature." Stopped me for a moment and I agreed but walked away mulling it over. What do you think about her comment? I'm sure everyone's definition of literature can differ, does it hold that literature takes more effort (for lack of a better word) to read?
