Is the book so linear that no one felt like opening a spoilers thread for this one?
Ok... one of the first gripes I had with the book is that Davy seemed to be too easily charged as a murderer. Yes, I do know that some hints of probable cause (is that how it's said?) were thrown at the jury, but... this was a situation of two teenagers, with bad, bad reputation on the neighbourhood, plus they had attacked two young females, plus they had threatened the family, plus they entered their house, sneaking up, on the middle of the night. And still, Davy gets convicted. Is that how it really works? Any juror on the house?
One of the scenes that changed the whole tone of the book for me (and I don't it changed for the better) was Dad walking on air, after getting out of the tractor. I was constantly thinking that he knew Reuben was there and was making it up, with some intricate combination of wires and some transparent stool (yes, I was grasping for rational concepts). Whereas Reuben's miraculous recovery at birth had motivated me to actually even buy the book, this scene of walking on air was too unreal.
I found it the usual cliche that they are drawn, out of nowhere, to a house with a widowed woman, who of course falls for Dad; also, the biggest cliche was having Davy living just a few miles away from the place. I mean, what are the odds?
The second to last chapter, the one where, supposedly, Dad exchanges his life for Reuben's... I was not expecting that. I think it was just too easy, having someone whose lungs were fractured, suddendly getting their lungs perfectly functioning.
And at the end... do you think Davy is still alive? Do you think Reuben has actually married Sarah?
The only character not mentioned in this rant is Swede. Of all the characters, she seemed the most optimistic, and paradoxically, the most sensible.
