11/06/08 10:40 AM	I am reading B is for Burglar by Sue Grafton. My local UBS had a huge sale (3 hardbacks for $2) and they had all of her books up to T so i got the whole collection. I read A yesterday so I am now moving on to B.

11/07/08 04:52 PM	EEek, keep starting different books even though the Saramago is here waiting for me. Finished Arlene Francis' memoir which was pretty much as I expected it to be. Not even sure why I read it except I was watching old game shows and wondered if any were at the library. Didn't find any easily but there was her book. Lots of name dropping of course. Her voice is somewhat deep and thus distinctive so I could kind of hear her voice while I was reading her words. Today grabbed "May Day" ?? when I went to pick up a kid from school. I had put it on hold for my dd as it showed up on a YoungAdult list. Holy smackaroly! Not a YA book which was fairly obvious from page 1. I'm so glad she didn't try it. So far it's a murder mystery with a librarian as the main character. I'm only on page 4 and really need to read the BCC book first. Olle

'Nough said. :) Olle Olle, I completely agree..... Spoiler [+] This book is awful. Is she trying to do a new version of Mary/Joseph? The interruptions by the narrorator talking about his own wife/children/slaves is even worse. I don't think I can even bring myself to donate this book to a charity shop. I'm tempted to use it as kindling! Just kidding, I'd never burn a book, but can't imagine where I'll leave this book. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. ......It took me about 15 minutes to figure out that spoiler thing. AGAIN. I have to look it up every time and it's in our shortcuts in quick reply. 11/10/08 02:47 PM BCC ZEN Bookie MASTER	Regarding Lace Reader: Spoiler [+] Not enjoying this particularly. I did check out the video on Amazon though, and I think I know why I don't like the book. She said she wanted to write a "women's hero" story - and it is very warm and fuzzy, but it feels to me as if it should be on Lifetime television, and I've never liked that kind of "girl" stuff. I did like the lace though and would like to know more about how they make it -- I like the creative process. If I had seen the 'women's hero' tag, I probably would have run for the hills instead of giving it a chance. Doesn't mean you would have liked it though. 11/12/08 07:49 AM BCC BookieMonster	Olle, re; the cleft Spoiler [+] I gave it to one of my piano students little brothers to lean on while coloring the other day(while she was in a lesson with me)... he's such a destroyer, I knew his accidents would be my excuse to throw The Cleft out and not feel bad! Markers everywhere, through all the pages, more than half now thankfully unreadable. Ha! His mother felt bad, until I explained I did it on purpose because I hated the book. Think I killed 2 birds with one stone there, got rid of a crappy book and gave subtle reminder to mother to watch her child with my stuff! It's nice for people who hate having any part of the plot revealed in advance, though I'm not one of those people. I'd like to know how to do that. Anyway, I'm reading a book that folks on an old AOL board recommended ages ago: Behind the Scenes at the Museum, by Kate Atkinson. Somehow I had it in my head that this novel was a murder mystery. I was so wrong! It's a multigenerational story set in Yorkshire, England. The narrator, like Tristran Shandy, begins telling her life story while in utereo. I'm liking it, just bemused that my understanding was so WRONG. Have any of you read it? 11/12/08 09:22 AM BCC ZEN BOOKIE COOKIE Administrator	Sherry, re spoilers--it's a simple code you can access from quick reply using the shortcut Ctrl-s, which puts in {spoiler}{/spoiler} but using square brackets instead of curly. Then you just type between the two codes. BEHIND THE SCENES OF THE MUSEUM--it was a group read for us in 98 and I remember liking it a lot and have read a bunch of hers since then. Her last three books have been 'mysteries' with an interesting lead character and a running theme about an incident that happened to him in the first of the three. So read them in order, I'd say. The narrator of The Gargoyle is a very contemporary cynic, physically beautiful and sexually adept, who dwells in the moral vacuum that is modern life. As the book opens, he is driving along a dark road when he is distracted by what seems to be a flight of arrows. He crashes into a ravine and suffers horrible burns over much of his body. As he recovers in a burn ward, undergoing the tortures of the damned, he awaits the day when he can leave the hospital and commit carefully planned suicide-for he is now a monster in appearance as well as in soul. A beautiful and compelling, but clearly unhinged, sculptress of gargoyles by the name of Marianne Engel appears at the foot of his bed and insists that they were once lovers in medieval Germany. In her telling, he was a badly injured mercenary and she was a nun and scribe in the famed monastery of Engelthal who nursed him back to health. As she spins their tale in Scheherazade fashion and relates equally mesmerizing stories of deathless love in Japan, Iceland, Italy, and England, he finds himself drawn back to life......
