10/27/08 09:10 AM	Betsy, I wish I had one wall of books. Mine are scattered in all the rooms, which means that sometimes I can't find what I am looking for. Also, thanks to the great prices at local UBS, I have quite a few unread books waiting for my attention. The gal my son is engaged to has books all over her house too. I love her. lol They have one of those 6 inch thick dictionaries and frequently play the dictionary game. Her 11 yo son did extra jobs around the house so he could earn enough money to pre-order the new Eragon book from Amazon. How cute is that? (Although I liked them at the time.) Believe it or not, it's my non-reading hubby who keeps discouraging me from this -- he likes the way they look on the shelves. But woe betide to anyone else who should suggest such a heresy! I dont have anyone other than my daughter and sister who read as much as I do. The sad thing is I collect books, not just fiction but non- fiction and cook books. I had to have a book shelf put in my laundry room so I could put my over 100 cook books. Now that we are moving, I am trying to thin it out a little, but I am finding a lot of books that I had forgotten about. It also doesnt help that my trip to the UBS to use up my credit there, turned into a shopping spree and I came home with three boxes of books.

11/06/08 06:19 PM	Over the past three years I have been deciding what books I really love and might refer to or read again, and I have been cleaning out. Ninety percent of the paperbacks are gone - sold at a second hand shop or donated to the library. I'm trying really hard since I've retired to use the library more; we live only three blocks from a fine library. So, while I consider myself a reading addict, I no longer consider myself a collector. I still have two tall bookcase full in my study, two short bookcases full in my studio, and misc. volumes in the living room, but no boxes or piles. The older I get the less I tolerate clutter - probably because I can't remember where I put anything any more! 11/07/08 12:10 AM BCC Zen Bookie Master	Curt helped me drag about six large cartons of books to our biggest second-hand store this week which included some of the signed, first editions that I got from my book store club. To my amazement and unhappiness, they passed on most of them, taking only a few which gave me a good credit of $65. The last time I did this, I got a credit of $200! I told them to donate them to whichever group came by for their church sale but I ducked into another ubs in the same (really!) strip mall and mentioned that in passing while I was there. The owner persuaded me to go back and get them and bring them to her which of course, I did. This store took all but six or seven books and clucked over the fact that the other store didn't take them. I got another bigger credit here so you all know where my books will be coming from this year! Curt says that he thinks that this is all indicative of the slump in retail sales in all stores everywhere and I agree with him. Watch for bigger and deeper sales as the stores go into the holiday season. They already are starting to panic! It's a good reason to NOT do your shopping early this year! Betsy

11/07/08 09:03 AM	I have two UBS's in my area. The one has OK books for high prices. THeir paperbacks are like $4 a piece. The hardbacks are anywhere from $10 to $20 with the lower priced ones not in the best shape. It had a different owner when I first started going there and the prices were better. The other one is better. All YA and above books are $3 (or $2 with credit) regardless of whether they are hard back or soft. And childrens books are 3 or $1 (3 fo 50 cents with credit). And when he gets over stock of hard backs he sells them 3 for $2 (but you cant use your credit). HE doesnt except books in poor condition, so all the books are in great shape. Most of the hardbacks look brand new. I am going to miss his store when I move. Now I have to find a new one in Maine, or open my own.
