07/01/09 10:45 AM	We're taking my grandson to a pediatric specialist today- remember a few months ago when I told you he got a tick bite? Well, the site is still red and has a hard bump. He has no other symptoms, it doesn't appear to bother him but it isn't healing. We have taken him to 4 doctors, 3 said, "oh, it's nothing." and one finally said, "There's something still in there and his body is incorporating it- he needs to be looked at by a specialist"! That's what we've been thinking for almost 4 months now. In essence, I think, this is kind of an example of our country's health care woes. I don't think he needs to be seen by a more expensive specialist, I think the first doctor, a family doctor could have taken care of this a long time ago but now it has become a bigger problem. He is a Medi-Cal patient (because his mother is a full time student and part time worker) and many doctors won't even see him. One of the doctors even admitted it, "You're going to have trouble finding someone who will accept him because he is Medi-Cal." I hope we get this medical stuff cleared up in this administration. I don't really think a governement sponsered plan is the way to go but I have been thinking that maybe it should something like our auto insurance with a sliding fee scale and no penatilty for pre-exsiting conditions or age, etc. as a starting point. IMHO There can be no other occupation like gardening in which, if you were to creep up behind someone at their work, you would find them smiling. Mirabel Osler

07/01/09 02:46 PM	I think we have come to expect safety as a given so that when we go to the store we can be assured we won't be poisoned or something else. We have to learn that what we have come to expect from our familiar brands made where we know what the rules are, is not the same around the world and that other countries don't have the same rules.If we go to the store and we buy Brand A we have a right to expect that we are getting Brand A not a low quality, cheaper Brand B. I posted here before about a show about our Border Inspectors. They showed a container marked 'Furniture'. Inside was not furniture at all but pretty good replicas of Nike shoes. The average person would not be able to tell that they weren't the real Nikes they were paying top dollar for if this Border Guard did not catch these fakes. Personally, I don't pay top dollar for tennis shoes but if I did I think I should get what I believe I am paying for. This company was obviously trying to swindle people and decieve the US by marking 'Furniture" on a container of shoes. In this case these were just shoes but if we are importing food, medicines, etc that we put in our bodies I think we have a right to get the quality product we think we are getting. When I was on my cruise in Mexico I saw signs for cheap drugs that are prescription only in the US. There is no way I would purchase them, I wouldn't trust them. There can be no other occupation like gardening in which, if you were to creep up behind someone at their work, you would find them smiling. Mirabel Osler

07/01/09 02:59 PM BCC Zen Bookie Master	I have bought Retin A in Mexico many times and it's fine. It comes in the exact packaging that the US druggist sells. In fact, my friendly (and he IS a pal!) druggist suggested that I cross the border for it since it costs $60 (and up) here and I get it for $10/12 in Nogales. Having said that, there are many drugs that I will not buy there under any circumstances. We have an elderly (that means older than we are) friend who gets his prescription meds mail order from Canada. I may look into that myself since my prescriptions are mega expensive these days. I'm on medicare and because I take so many meds, I fall into "the donut hole" early on in the year. What that means is that once I hit a certain level, I have to pay full price on every medication until I reach a certain amt. Then and only then do I get the cheapest rate on them. You'd think that since I buy so much that that would happen quickly but unfortunately it doesn't seem that way. It's way too complicated and I'm sorry to have bored you with it. The reason why so many retired people move to towns near the borders is to be able to cross and get meds discounted. 07/01/09 11:26 PM BCC ZEN Bookie MASTER	What is it I always see on the doors at Walgreen's and King Soopers (Kroger's) about $4 prescription programs? I know they give me some of my scrips for $4 so I assume they are specific things but, surely, there's a way to do this more cheaply. Bets, some of the stuff I take is freakin' expensive... can't imagine what I'd do without insurance. Fortunately, hubby is younger than I am so, hopefully, I'll just be dead by the time he retires and we don't have insurance anymore. BTW -- if I had an ongoing need for, say, penicillin or something that generic, I would buy it in Mexico without hesitation. Although, in truth, the only thing I've ever purchased in a Mexican pharmacy is hydrogen peroxide (Agua Oxeginada) and aspirin. How much could those two things get screwed up? Oh, and wait, an inhaler for my son when the whole family was there a few years ago. I asked for albuterol and they said we don't have that but we have this, which is the same thing. Since then there;s some issue between the companies that make the two different things so you can only get the one I bought in Mexico, anyway. Italian pharmacy stores are pretty similar but the few products I bought (eye drops and ibuprofen -- although it's not called that there) were from familiar companies (American? I don't know. I used to think Nestle was American when I was a kid and now I know it's not) with production in... Spain, if I recall correctly. See, Jill, I'm not being quiet anymore! ;) Do you wish I was? 07/02/09 12:25 AM	I will vouch for the Canadian pharmacy option, not just because I'm a former Canadian but because it is working for my daughter- a drug she needs is $160 for a month with no generic available and she gets a 3 month supply from Canada for $75, generic version. This is legal and she does it through her doctor here. The specialist today said there is definitely something left in my grandson's tick bite and at the end of the month he will go in for out patient surgery to have it removed. He will have to go under general anesthetic but he said there is nothing to be overly concerned about. Darn ticks. Hugs to the little big guy. That donut hole in the program is such a crock, isn't it? I remember when the so-called debate was going on over which program to use and they were being discussed on the radio and people were calling in saying, "Why the hole? why have one?" and the blustering heads in WDC had some stupid reason for it. Now that I think about it, it's not a donut hole, it's a whirlpool that sucks people's bank balances down and out. My mom was just diagnosed with needing an eye drop, luckily she's needed next to nothing as far as prescrips until recently, and it turns out what was prescribed is the same drug I take in my eyes. Anyway, her prescrip company wouldn't cover it. It would cost $150 for about a month's worth. Yikes. I couldn't pay that and wouldn't be using this drug if it wasn't for insurance covering most of the cost. So now she's on something the insurance would cover. Sigh. I didn't know the answers to any of those questions, I feel dumb, noit really but they were interesting. Today I am repainting my bathroom- blue. My son's girlfriend is studying interior design and she came over and told me that yellow is a very bad color for people with a mental disorder (like my husband's Alzheimer's). It upsets them apparently, studies have shown this. So she said she would help me paint the bathroom. I'm not too concerned about it but I'll take any excuse to do a little redecorating! Ah, new towels, new bath mat, new curtains, fun, fun and I'm helping the economy by spending a little money. I take two very expensive meds daily (together more than $300 per month), or I'm supposed to. One I weaned off, the other I can sometimes get samples that last one month from my doc. I had to get such a big deductible in order to even afford insurance, that my drugs don't get covered til the end of the year, if then. Three others are in the $4 program. One of which was just changed to a different generic that I thought would be $4 as well. Turns out, it's $90 per month, but my Rx matches KMart pricing so I got it for $5. whew. I really can't understand why people are standing in the way of overhauling the health are system. Of course, most of them would sell their mothers at a 75% discount. OH btw, fabulous match just played by Serena Williams and Dementiava (sp?) They're going to replay it on NBC in about 20 minutes; watch if you can. Best women's match so far. I don't know about other states but here in California the wealthiest people are the heads of health care companies. Which is saying something when you consider we have Tinsel Town and all those exorbitant salaries, not to mention the Silicon valley salaries.
