10/08/09 04:46 PM	Tags : book, horror, fall, winter, spooky So, as the title suggests i'm looking for a good, spooky book or multiple books to read this fall. Now, I do NOT want to read a straight up horror book. I'm simply not that into the horror genre. The books i'm looking for would be more akin to Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, or even better, the Legend of Sleepy Hollow. I like these books because they are period books, and I love the atmosphere and settings. I have been looking all over for books similar to these but am having a hard time finding anything. I like books that take place in the fall or winter with mystery and fright thrown in. Any recommendations will be much appreciated. THANKS!

10/08/09 05:43 PM BCC ZEN BOOKIE COOKIE Administrator	Hmm that's an interesting request, and nice and specific too. First thing that comes to mind is Carlos Ruiz Zafon's Shadow of the Wind. Superior, spooky, and set abroad and in an earlier time period 1950s Barcelona and he's a helluva writer too. There's also Instance of the Fingerpost, another historical mystery of sorts, but i can't remember if it's spooky. If I think of more, I'll post them.

10/08/09 06:32 PM	While they are not new, some of Ray Bradbury's novels and short stories are creepy without being horrific. You could try Something Wicked This Way Comes, or The Halloween Tree. I also like Shirley Jackson's short novels The Haunting of Hill House, and also We Have Always Lived in a Castle. The stories are heavy on character and atmosphere, light on violence or gore. 11/01/09 11:23 PM	I heard part of an interview with Peter Straub where he had helped select horror stories to be part of an anthology (?). He told how some were pretty old, including some women writers who had never reached fame although he thought they should have. Sounded like this was the 2nd part of the anth. Have no idea of the title.
