Yipeee yay yay, remember the book Amagansett by Mark Mills? And The Savage Garden (with all those statues)? Well he has a new one coming out and I just snagged
an ARC: it's called THE INFORMATION OFFICER--due out in Feb. Mystery set on Malta during WWII. Yum.
Karen, Courtney? Anyone else? Did you get anything?

I got Sea of Poppies, which I know has been out for a while and you read, Jill. I've had it on my bookmooch wishlist for a while so figured I would request
it even though its not a new release.

Courtney, it must be the paperback version that's coming out. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did; I can't wait for the second in the trilogy, but I
guess I have to.

I didn't manage to "snag" anything this time which, as you know, is just as well.
Although I did request Sea of Poppies...

oh YIPPEE!! KidLit NEWSFLASH
I was in the kiddo's dep't at B&N today and noticed that all 4 Noel Streatfield "Shoes" are back in print (Ballet Shoes, Theatre Shoes, Dancing Shoes, Skating Shoes)!! I LOVED these books growing up, and after the snotty reference in You've Got Mail about these books implying that clerks in non-tiny non-indie book stores don't actually read (HUH! check out our store's Book Loan Log and our Employee Discount purchases and TELL me my colleagues and I don't read!), it kinda sticks in my mind when I see something like new cover art or one going oop or coming back |

Yes, Sea of Poppies is the only one of the trilogy out so far. Don't know when the next entry will be completed but if it's as good as Poppies,
it'll be worth waiting for. Might be hard to remember all the character names/stories by then but right now I still remember the stories if not the names.
I just ordered the new Ishiguro short stories--been too long since I read him and Karen's mention of When We Were Orphans pushed me over the yearning edge.

Ooo I'm so glad to have a companion in loving that book. Have you read any others of his? Hungry Tide is excellent too but much smaller scope. Beautiful
though.

Oh, I think you'll like that one, Jen. I think just about everyone here did.
I have a sort of love/hate relationship with The Glass Castle; on the one hand I really liked the book, and on the other hand it seriously, seriously pissed me off. Those parents! But i'm looking forward to reading her second.

Did anyone read this in last Friday's Shelf Awareness:
"Amazon's astute timing" was examined by the Wall Street Journal, which reported: "It isn't a secret that Amazon's financial success is partly based on its ability to take in money for selling merchandise before it has to pay its suppliers. But lately Amazon has gone one better: steadily lengthening the time it takes to pay suppliers. That has been a factor behind the retailer's soaring cash flow. In the third quarter, Amazon stretched out its bill payment to 72 days, up from 63 in the year-earlier period. As Brian Evans, an analyst for research firm Behind the Numbers, notes, this 'theoretically means that Amazon has not paid suppliers for sales consummated in mid-June.' Amazon's sales rose 28% in the quarter, but accounts payable nearly doubled, helping push free cash flow up 116%."

Karen, that problem isn't limited to Amazon. Several of my clients (which are hired by the big pharmaceuticals) are extending the time to payment claiming
that the pharmas have regularly changed payment delivery to 90 to 120 days and therefore they can't pay freelancers. Normally, I would get paid 30 days
from the time I deliver a project; it has now become routine to make that 60 days and one company still owes a colleague after 120 days.
I suspect that they're using the economy as an excuse to delay payment. I told one client that essentially, their large company was taking an unapproved loan from a worker bee by not paying for work in a reasonable time. They just paid me for work I submitted in July. Are others of you who aren't salaried seeing the same thing?

From today's Shelf Awareness, a literary prize I'd never heard of (!) which mentions at least one book that Jill, Betsy, Sandra and others might be
interested in:
Awards: Impac Award Longlist This year's €100,000 (US$146,515 ) International Impac Dublin Literary Award longlist includes "novels by four Irish writers, a huge range of works in translation, and a strong U.S. representation," according to the Irish Times, which observed that "the nomination of two major Chinese writers--Jiang Rong for his stark, autobiographical Wolf Totem, which laments the death of an ancient culture; and Ma Jian, for Beijing Coma--testifies to the importance of this year's longlist." The Times also noted that the Impac can have a significant influence "by showcasing the best of international fiction in translation. The readers of the world's participating libraries have presented the judges with a magnificent list of world-class contenders." Dublin City Council will announce the shortlist April 14, 2010, and the winner will be named June 17, 2010.
