I looked and Fort Hood is between Waco and Austin--but not close to either, the place is HUGE, Tx style. And now yet another shooting in FL, Orlando. Humans have really devolved.

Thanks Sandra--he's trying to get some portrait commissions for Christmas and wants to use it as a sample. I of course don't want to let it out of my
sight LOL. He nagged me into posting an offering of services on Craigs list, because he couldn't figure out how to post the image. I'm awfully
skeptical about putting anything out there, but he was so eager (my Scorpio after all), so we'll see.

Jill, gorgeous picture - he's so talented!
Think I've mentioned the birds that come for breakfast in my backyard - this morning I was a bit late and my regular pukeko visitor was screeching for his handout - here he is grabbing the bread before those pesky sparrows get in first.

Fort Hood is near Temple and Kileen and is huge--I drove past the south side of it a number if years ago . It's about 1/2 way between Austin and Waco a bit
west of I 35.

What an interesting looking bird! The legs are really weird. That Fort Hood story is sure a sad story.

Jill, lovely painting. Can almost hear the squeals of laughter. He is so talented.
Barb, thanks for the bird pics. What are the long talons/claws for? do they roost in trees usually and need to keep hold of thick branches? Very neat looking bird. And those nails! Do they scratch in the dirt for bugs/worms? |

That bird looks much like a turkey vulture without the ugly wattle (sp?). Those legs are really odd aren't they? Interesting black and blue--wonder how
that happened.

Pukeko are swamp birds - they're wading birds and those large feet give them stability on swampy ground. Thefeet always look vaguely prehistoric to me and
I'm always amazed at how dexterous they are - they use them to grasp things and bring them up to their beaks. Our house backs on to a wetland heritage park
which is gradually being restored to its original state and the bird population is growing steadily and more and more species returning. I've been putting
out food for smaller birds over winter and this pukeko must have wandered up and discovered bread was thrown out regularly - it's an almost daily visitor
and screeches if there's no bread out there and comes running when it hears me.

Yesterday I ordered an item from Amazon for my daughter for Christmas. Today I realized that I had ordered the totally wrong thing (an attachment for a
KitchenAid stand mixer when her mixer is actually Sunbeam). So, since the item isn't scheduled to ship until Nov 20 - 30, cancelling it shouldn't be a
problem -- right? Wrong. It's going to come anyway and I'll have the hassle of returning it.
Except for that issue and hubby's nieces' two kids (whom I forgot about) my Christmas shopping is not only DONE but everything is WRAPPED! I had to wrap it -- there wasn't any more room in my closet or under the beds to hide stuff! (BTW, for someone who is better at grammar than I am: Is that a proper usage of of 'whom' above or should it be 'who'?)

Wow, good for you, my shopping is about half way done but the rest are going to be gift cards for my kids- they know hat they want, why
should I strain my brain?

Is that a proper usage of of 'whom' above or should it be 'who'?) Whom is right--the easiest way to remember it for me is that if you reverse the order and the pronoun would be "him" or "her" it takes whom; it it takes she or he, it's who. As in I forgot about him/her; you wouldn't say I forgot about he/she. To me that's easier to remember than the grammatical rule "to know whether to use who or whom, we need to talk about the difference between subjects and objects because you use who when you are referring to the subject of a clause and whom when you are referring to the object of a clause." Christmas...oy no habla Christmas

PBee, I just always remember that "whom" and "him" are linked because they both use "m"s. Lately, I have been trying to figure
out an easy way to remember "imply" versus "infer". I know which is which but need a quicker way than thinking the whole matter through; I
need a trick.
