Pb, I'm also reading essays from "Days of Destiny--Crossroads in American History" which has as editors James McPherson and Alan Brinkley. They had various historians write essays regarding dates they thought were "uncelebrated days that changed the course of history" and you're right, I just read about Chief Joseph -- as the Americans called him. Some of this stuff is fascinating, some I've skimmed. Turns out there's only so much about labor law I can read. :)
Alan Brinkley, as it happens, is the main author on the history book my son is using in school. Wonder if he's related to David Brinkley?
