I have to go with the -1 as I couldn't get past about page 20 and then exercised the part of the readers bill of rights that allows a reader to give up on
a book!

Olle, I don't know how you decided on 1.8 but as I look at it, I agree.
There was nothing particularly wrong with the book, other than my personal objections to the sadism, but i just couldn't like it and could not recommend it. I think we need a rating that stands for 'only finished it because it's a group read and it wasn't bad enough to throw across the room'

1.8 too. I like that rating.
No quibbles but barely finished. It had me enough that I wanted to find out how it all turned out. "The pleasures provided by books and reading are enhanced many times over in the context of a successful club..." Martha Rosen

I like that rating too, but since I didn't finish it, it's Dorothy for me.

Ok, I haven't had time to get on here and post properly but I'm on Mags side of things here and will give it a 2.8 (to keep with the 8 theme). I
enjoyed the characters, not that they were good, but the way they were described in depth and the complexity of them. The gore didn't bother me but that
ending was awful. Like everyone else, I don't understand Kuniko falling for Satake. (Sorry this should go in the discussion thread)

I was looking forward to the chat last night in hopes that someone could point out some redeeming qualities for this book. I fell asleep so I guess that pretty
much sums up my feelings toward OUT! I read about half before skipping to the end and even that was just because it was a group read. Not my cup of tea! So
maybe a 0.8.

I'll give it a 2.5. I thought it was extremely well conceived but lingered a bit too long in several places.

2.5 - awful subject matter but she did describe the setting really well, the tedium of factory life and the general hopelessness of the women's existence
was poignantly portrayed. She has another book titled 'Grotesque' I wonder what that is about...lol

Perhaps it was just as well that my library didn't fill my reserve until a few days befor the chat. The book was just too intimidating to start.

I'll stay with my 4 out of 5 - so many of those very tiny details did remind me of Japan, of the time that I have spent there personally - it's even as if I could see the womens' apartments, their kitchens, their meals, the convenience stores, ... everything right in front of me
Also, I liked all those unexpected twists the plot had in it as a surprise - it was not the predictable kind of mystery-case-gets-solved-by-cool-detective thriller, there was much more under the surface than what I would have expected but still, the story evolved around those four women. No political conspiracies or dramatic gangster huntings, the story stayed on the level of those women, giving very personal insight views on each one of them. I can truly understand that for many readers the gore part was too disgusting and the ending left you feeling as if you were reading some trash book - to me, there was more behind all that
