Thanks for your recommendation of Jonathan Carroll. It seems though that he is not very known here. Actually not at all. Couple of his books have been
translated but there is not much mentioned. I´m afraid my selection process for my next book is far too underorganized for recommendations. I just get what I
can easily get and usually read one book from every author. If it´s really good then I might read more.

Gisela, what a great idea. I started to answer you here but I'll move it to the thread you began asking the question about the group.
Good luck

Hi, I'm Jo, mom of 2 from NY. I read every night before bed, sometime waaaaaay past my bedtime. I swap books with my dad & cousin, when all are
finished reading them, they are donated to the local library. I am currently reading The Kite Runner by Khaled
Hosseini.

I'm in Westchester on the edge of Putnam. I am in the minority in that I did not enjoy Kite Runner. (the only one?) I did love the chat though!

Small world, dlee! Before The Kite Runner, I read Eat, Pray, Love
by Elizabeth Gilbert. I think I like this book better.

My sis-in-law went to a talk Gilbert gave in Long Island. She said it really made her want to read the book. I'll wait till she has finished then
"steal" her copy!

Hello! My name is Jason and I have been searching like MAD for a community of readers to join, but it seems that most on Yuku have died out. So sad!!! So,
again I say hello, everyone! I don't have nearly the time to read that I once did, but I try to fit in whatever I can. I am about to start a new book by
Peter Esterhazy called Celestial Harmonies Is anyone familiar with it?

Hi ya Jason--we're not dead or dying, we just have an odd aroma on some days.
The title Celestial Harmonies IS familiar, but not by that author--Andrea Barrett had a short story by that name, though I don't remember whether it got published under that title or became part of Lucid Stars. And Peter Esterhazy sounds like Phil Esterhouse from the old Hill Street Blues--"be careful out there" LOL I think the pace of your blinking signature is making my synapses fire oddly--but at least I'm not having an epileptic fit. So, who else do you like to read and what part of the world are you from?

old Newbie? Isn't that a dichotomy or something? | #77 | ||

Okay what's a girl to do when she's been away for a long time and dang if she knows what she should put up top at the title. Geesh they took my name so
had to be creative with a new one. Tried to take the name Jillo but you know who must have syphoned all the sound alike names. Anyway hi to my old friends and
boy you must really be old now since I wasn't (tee hee hee) when this first started but I sure am now. Anyway I still read but don't have much time to
talk about the books. Same old authors, Connelly, Koontz, Evanovitch, Lee Childs ( whose protagonist,Reacher, my daughter and I always have a bet with as to
which chapter he will bed a damsel). Kellerman ( Jonathan) and lately have been caught up in the Kay Hooper 'Fear" series with Bishop and all his
psychic cohorts. Oh and am still a really bad typist. If this looks good tis only because I've corrected it 100 times over. I hope my avatar works for it
looks just like me
The last good mystery I read was a Harlan Coben. Oh
and I see that Jill has already "tied " up another newbie, sorry bout that Jason but she likes to "rope" people in sometimes. lol It's
"knot" funny Jill

Hi, Jill! Thanks for the quick reply! Sooooo...funny story. I was out of town when I wrote my first post and I left Celestial Harmonies there. Grrrrrrrr...I had finished a page. Anyway, not sure what I'll be reading next but I have a whole
shelf full of unread goodness, so I'll let you know when I decide.
lol. Sorry about the signature, I've turned it off for this board since it was designed for another. I love to read novels of most any sort but have a particular penchant for the adventurous writings of Dan Brown, Clive Cussler, and the like. I also love classic literature and have a grand time trying to hunt down rare books and printings. My favorite book of all time would have to be the Count of Monte Cristo and I am still looking for a good edition. I just picked up a numbered copy of the first English printing of Don Quixote, which excites me GREATLY! I guess I'm a book dork. ;-) Anyway, glad to be here and happy to make your acquaintance. |

Welcome, Jason! You're in good company here as we are all either book dorks or addicts of some stripe. If you like Dan Brown then I think you'll like
the book I just finished reading, The Forgery of Venus by Michael Gruber. It won't be released until April 1 but keep an eye out for it then. I
also enjoyed his The Book of Air and Shadows but I think that one would not be everyone's cup of tea. It gets a little over-the-top adventuresome
at the end which I thought was kind of funny in a way but I can see why some people might roll their eyes at it.
Happy reading and welcome to the group.
Karen
