I think there are several of us here who love to read good mysteries and thrillers so you'll fit right in. I can't believe you left your book behind. I usually have mind clenched tightly in my hot little hand. I'd miss my book long before I missed my cell phone or most any other important possession. Jason, the one thing that jumps out at me is your acquisition of the numbered English-version of Don Quixote!! What a find!! Hang onto that one!! I would love to own it and I know someone else who would love it more than either of us put together! She's a prof of Spanish at Dartmouth College and for the last ten days, she and her dh were our most generous hosts in Barcelona. Her specialty is Spanish theater and that applies to Don Q too (I know it wasn't originally on stage but it has been for eons since that time). Betsy

Glad to see another guy joining the ranks of the Book Bunch here (no offense, ladies - I love you all too, you know!) Big Dickens fan here as well, but I do agree that it takes a little bit longer for me to read his works due to the style and excess verbiage you pointed out here (he did get paid by the word, right? or was it by the page?) Anyway, my fave of Dickens would be: Great Expectations I have yet to have read A Tale of Two Cities and it's been sitting here on my bookshelf screaming "read me!" for quite some time. Maybe this summer I will pick it up again and commit to it. I'm one of those ADD readers who always has about 3 or 4 books going at a time and I tend to pick up whichever one is "calling" to me at the moment, if that makes any sense at all? For those new members here who don't know me -- I am Kevin. I'm 43 and teach high school English (don't be afraid - I'm not here to assess anyone's grammar or spelling - in fact, I often let my own grammar and spelling lapse on these boards and emails quite frequently, I confess!) I live in Pompano Beach, Florida and grew up in Monmouth Beach, NJ. Something about living near the beach - it's just something that I can't get out of my blood, I guess. I love all kinds of reading material, but tend to lean toward fiction. I enjoy mysteries, thrillers, Best Sellers, quirky lesser known books .. oh let's face it, I'm a bibliophile! I'll pick up anything and read it! (Must confess, however, that I'd rather read a book than student compositions and research papers - ugh!) I'm also always on the lookout for books which may appeal to my students - I will do anything to get a book into their hands which they may enjoy! A good website I enjoy searching from time to time is www.teensreadtoo.com for suggestions for my adolescent readers (and there are quite a few there that appeal to me as well!) Guess I'm still a "kid" at heart? Anyway - that's a bit about me. Welcome to all the new members! This is a GREAT group and I'm sure you'll enjoy it here. 06/26/08 01:39 AM	Hi, I'm Mari in N E Ohio... Mary with an "i" ;). Reading books provides me with what I understand a good work out provides a runner/an athlete... the endorphins... the "high". End of June, 2008... I'm currently reading my 35th book of the year. Yes, I keep track of them as I'm apt to forget and grab the same book again and again from the shelves. I do not like reading the same books over, just as I do not enjoy watching the same movies over and over, no matter how good. When it's done, it's done... I move onto something else. Some new adventure and to me, that's what books provide me. A "place to go"... an escape if you will. Read into that what you might. After a frustrating six months trying to find a book club locally, I decided to tune into the internet and that brought me here. Though not a newbie to the world of the Internet, I'm extremely new to joining forums/message boards, etc. so I hope to "meet" others who share similar interests, but you'll probably have to make the "first move". I'm a dunce when it comes to this. My tastes in books lean toward horror/mystery/thriller, but not limited to that. As with music, it depends on my mood. Within the last year I've become enraptured in what others have termed "transgressional fiction" and Noirecrime Fiction/Pulp". I'm greedily reserving books from the libraries by authors Chuck Palahniuk, Brett Easton Ellis and Charlie Huston. In my humble opinion, if any others know these authors you either love 'em or hate 'em. I'm open to all types of genres, however, and can't wait to new discoveries through this forum.

We certainly hear about different books or find various treasures and like to talk about them. The good, the bad and the bewildering! lol A lot of us keep track of what we've read and some of us use the website Library Thing to keep track. What method do you use? I'm not sure what transgressional fiction is, which authors/titles have you liked that you'd classify that way? We're all bookaholics here, welcome! Olle

I know we have at least one Chuck Palahniuk fan here. My outside-the-box author, as everyone here knows by now, is Jonathan Carroll. A lot of us read mysteries/thrillers etc, but as there's usually less to discuss about those, we tend to talk about other types of books. We DO however have a "Who Dun It?" pick every few months--we read a mystery and try to guess as we go along who dun it and why etc. We hope you'll join the fun--our most-used threads are What We're Reading Now and Chat, but jump in to any thread and have at it. And by the way...is Yuku's clock messed up or were you two up at almost 3 am? Currently reading: Down River Just finished: No Time for Goodbye, Chasing Darkness, Highest Tide, Hungry Tide

Look above to see the authors who write what some have termed "transgressional fiction"... heck, I got that term from Wikipedia, HA!. Chuck Palahniuk's, Rant, (His most recent & fiction), got me hooked...Since then it's been his Stranger than Fiction, (non-fiction), Diary, (fiction), Survivor, (fiction) and almost done with Choke. Lullaby's still waiting in my "to read" pile. He's best known for his book, Fight Club, that was made into a movie with Brad Pitt. As with Mr. Palahniuk's, I started out with Brett Easton Ellis' most recent, Lunar Park, then went from there. Not until I read it in the aforementioned Wikipedia, did I realize that they compare both authors as writing this type of fiction. Mr. Ellis' book, American Psycho, was also made into a movie. I've just now realized that it may seem that the only authors I do like are one's who's material can be made into movies and that wasn't how I discovered either of them. (hhhmmm). I'm really looking forward to new discoveries!

I think this site's already created a monster. Honest people, even though, in this case Yuku's clock wasn't wrong... (I was actually up until almost 5 am), I actually DO have a life! What CAN I say? (Those delightful reads that I won't admit to in public because they are just too frivolous! Like Piers Anthony's Xanth series. I gobbled it up like candy a few years back but always hid the covers!) I know what you mean about not being able to find a book club. I've been hoping for years but no one in my neighborhood is interested. This group has been a god-send for me. And my taste in literature has really expanded.
