I just picked this up today and have read the first chapter - very well written - extremely vivid descriptions of sea-life at low tide….so real that you can feel the silt squelching in your boots as you walk through the mud flats, albeit a little wary of what may lie just beyond one's field of vision…

My book just arrived in the mail yesterday - only paid 75 cents for it on half.com and it is brand new paperback! yahoo! Anyway - I digress - I have read all
the commentary on the cover and inside the front cover and this sounds like an amazing book. I'm taking an online class right now called "Reading in
the Content Areas" and was thinking what a great book this would be to have biology or marine biology high school students read in class. Also read the
first chapter and enjoy the style of the book so far. Having grown up by the beach (two block away from the ocean) and the Shrewsbury River (also just a few
blocks west of my house) I think I'm going to really enjoy this book. I can remember spending hours as a kid by the seashore investigating and exploring
along with my brother and cousin. Great choice of books, guys and gals! Kevin

LOL I thought about you when I saw that Deb. I have the book but haven't opened it yet (too much to read in between to begin) but worry about an overdose
of tidal waters and biology, although I'm very much enjoying that aspect of The Hungry Tide. So I too will plunge in with expectations held at bay
(Oy, two water puns in one rotten sentence--sorry)

You know how we've had occasional discussions about the irritating things people do to books, especially library books? Well, I just came across what I
consider to be the most egregious instance *ever* of messing with a library book. On page 6 of the edition of The Highest Tide that I'm reading
there is this sentence:
It was low tide by then, and I saw the water hesitating at itsYes, that's right, someone has crossed out the word apex and written in the word nadir above it. Regardless of whether the word used is correct or not, it isn't up to some punk library patron to change it!

I'm only about 5 chapters into the book, and not spoiling anything (I hope) just wanted to say that I don't feel it is a biology book so much as a tale
of a young teen coming to terms to with his life and growing up and seeking recognition and love from family, friends and community. I really like it so far
and was hesitating about reading it as well due to the scientific/marine biology connection (I'm not much into science, to be honest). I enjoy the
character's voice so far and the narrative - think my teens at school would enjoy this one, but we'll see as I get deeper into it. Kevin

I agree Deb, boy's coming of age stories, at times can be pretty predictable - the same old happenings really. I've begun to enjoy the story more as its moved on to the development of other characters in the small community - and away from the intense focus on details of marine life, although the coastal setting plays a large part in this - but some interesting characters are turning up now..

Geek central here is enjoying the biology--I thought it might be a bore after The Hungry Tide, but it's such a different topic that it's enjoyable.
I'm only at p 77 (Chap 12) but it's good reading.
Deb, I feel for you re the coming of age stories--they can be icky sweet or icky re surging hormones but kind of neat when they don't succumb to either. Don't know where this one falls yet.

I'm thoroughly enjoying this one, and I didn't really expect to. I guess I'm a member of Jill's geek central because I'm fascinated by all
the details of marine life peppered throughout the book, that being a subject about which I'm woefully ignorant. I'm in chapter 26 -- about page 206 --
and so far don't find it either icky sweet or hormonally charged although, this being about a teenaged boy, there are certainly slight elements of both.
Miles seems to me an amazingly well-adjusted and 'normal' kid for 13-soon-to-be-14.
His elderly friend, Florence, made an interesting comment about him a few pages back: "...I'm not worried about you because you don't get in your own way. You never have, and believe it or not, that makes you extraordinary. The Eleusinians are going to school to try to become what you are when you wake up." I readily admit I don't understand that comment, but it sounds very profound, doesn't it? Guess I'll have to mull it over a while longer.

I'm watching a NATURE program featuring cephalopods and other underwater creatures and my enjoyment is heightened by the two recent books Highest Tide and
Hungry Tide Astounding photography too and clear ign of personality and intelligence. wow

Finally found some time this weekend to start reading this; I'm between 1/3 and 1/2 of the way. Very simple reading; is this meant for a younger audience?
I have to admit skimming a lot of the marine life. I'm find that the first-time author's descriptive phrases of nature and marine life are a bit over
the top for me. I don't mind learning about the marine life, but the stretch to provide a vivid description for EVERYTHING natural is bordering on, well,
first-time writer errors.
