I'm guessing that the plural monsters in the title is more metaphoric than that they'll find another one, which is kind of sad in a dragon sort of way All those years alone? This is definitely NOT a book for kids, is it. Eeeps Odd how she's using real photographs, isn't it? Made me double-check the fiction part (I had skipped the author's note at the front as usual and had to go back and read it). I was thinking maybe it is part Groff-bio and part make-believe whimsy, I wouldn't mind confirmation of whom I 'm looking at though, it would flesh out the wider context a bit more possibly - how much of this is real to those in the photos?. Mmmm I've just finished Hetty's story - up to Cowboy Faces. 'Fiction is the craft of telling the truth through lies' she writes at the beginning - maybe she's touched up the photos too! Midwives help people out.

Found in an interview at http://loadedquestions.blogspot.com/2008/05/monsters-of-templeton-author-interview.html but I DIDN"T read the rest it because I was afraid of spoilers--so check it out at your own risk Kelly: A lot of readers (myself included) have expressed the fact that the family trees, maps, portraits and family pictures in the book add to the authenticity of the book, the town you've created and the characters that inhabit it. When/Why did you decide to include these things? Were you involved in the selection of the photos? Lauren: The photos came from the composition of the book--I've been a huge fan of old-time photography forever, and one of my favorite things in the world is going to antique stores to find evocative old photographs. Pre-snapshot pictures really show the soul of the human sitting there--there's no masklike grin that we nowadays fall into. I found that when I had a visual reference for some of the characters I was able to dig more deeply into who they were. It wasn't until I sold the book that I thought, "Huh. I have all these pictures...Monsters is a book about genealogy...what if I created a sort of family album effect?" Plus, it helps to keep some of the people straight, and I thought it was pretty fun. Reading this book brings back so many memories of living in upper New York State on Skaneateles Lake. The whole scenario of the book is so true to life. It's almost as though I'm back in that gorgeous setting again. There were lots of stories of hauntings but no monsters............ that I knew of. Don't you feel so sorry for that big ole' monster? Pretty rural? stories stories--what was it like? I do feel sorry for him/her, especially when they talk about the hands curling and the long neck. 07/24/08 01:44 PM BCC BookieMonster	Skaneateles Lake, the smallest of the New York finger lakes. Above is a shot from the air that I found on the internet. It hasn't changed a whole lot since I used to live there. I don't believe the Chamber of Commerce will allow it. It's quite rural with most of the neighboring towns and villages being involved in dairy or farming. It's aprox. 20 or so miles South West of Syracuse which is where serious shopping is done. I used to hop on Rt. 90 (NY State Thrwy) to Rochester every 6 months or so I didn't feel quite so stranded. I loved it there........ once I got used to everyone in the grocery store and on the street knowing my name and my daughter's due date. It's a tourist town, just like Templeton. You hate the tourists but know the town needs them to survive. Skaneateles also has it's grey, blue and white ladies....most beautiful Victorians you've ever seen which are now bed and breakfasts. Lots of ice fishing in the winter and every year someone dies out there on the ice which receives more press than tourists dying when their sailboat capsizes. Big claim to fame was that Rod Serling had a summer house on the East side of the lake. For you young'ns, he wrote The Twilight Zone. I've spent time in northern NY but not that far up or west. One of the things I love about reading is that it stretches me to look up other information. Was supposed to return to books to the library and pick up this one and it just didn't happen. I did all that wedding reception shopping and just ran out of steam... library is closed tomorrow, reception is on Saturday, so maybe Monday. Kind of strange since it's the smallest of all the finger lakes. I was all over the Catskills as a kid. My dad used to work his grandfather's farm in the summer so the area was home away from home for him. And how we ended up there? Quickly..... My Dad, being a project engineer, took a job there which was going to take several years so my parents packed up and went the year I went off to college. Then I married, became pregnant & Rich was sent to Viet Nam. I put all our stuff in storage, moved in with my parents and Paige was born 4 months later one snowy, dreary day in October. Lots of good memories, lots of not so good. I'm impressed, Jodi, by your grandfather's lake. Wow! You were the one who honked at me! Damn, girl! I almost drove off the road. We went, every summer, for years to Lake Mohonk. You Catskillers will know where that is. Just gorgeous. Good times were had when I realized I was old enough to hang out with the staff in the evenings. Had my own version of Dirty Dancing. There was a guy (can't remember his name) who used to do paintings in 10 minutes (pretty good ones too, considering) with a palette knife. We'd go ice skating in the winter (mom knitted me a gray and red sweater and matching hat). Funny story. My cousin did the day to day bookkeeping. One day, he was off by a nickel. Couldn't get it to balance, no matter how hard he struggled. Finally, he pasted an actual nickel into the ledger book (no Quicken back then) with a note, "Here's, your lousy nickel." I read Last of the Mohicans and as a kid. It was one of my favorites along with Northwest Passage by Kenneth Roberts. I think we owned The Deerslayer but if I ever read it, I don't know.
