3. There were a few quibbles or I would have gone with the 4. The opening line sort of put me off. I hesitated a few days before picking the book up again but
was glad that I did. I liked the characters and the ending was a big surprise.

Haven't finished this one yet, but getting close.
3 so far for me. I enjoy the characters, the setting of Salem, and the narrative structure; I was having a bit of trouble keeping the characters straight in the beginning and kept putting the book down in frustration of keeping who was who clear in my mind, but that may just be me and the medication I am taking, which effects my memory and concentration. Hope to finish it today and then read the chat record and everyone else's comments on the book. Sorry I missed the chat! I was really looking forward to it, but didn't want to spoil the end of the book for myself since you've all said it was such a surprise ending. Kevin |

Deb, missed you at the chat!
I guess I'd rate it 3.5; I particularly enjoyed the last third or so and that I was surprised. Good board discussion and chat too since there was so much to interpret.

This was a good solid 3 for me. Kept me interested all the way, and I can think of a number of other people who will enjoy it.

I liked the Salem site and the kids playing in the dark but frankly found it a confusing plot with many unexplained questions. Not my cuppa. Make it a 1.5

Okay, since you're asking LOL -- a 1 with -1 tendencies; ubercool premise, execution like the dog's breakfast (again, eye of the beholder and all but
my eyes say "Bleh!")

I'm going with a 3.5 as well. I really enjoyed this one and was sad I couldn't make the chat!

I also give it a 3.5. I loved the little lace quotes at the beginning of most chapters. The end was quite a surprise.

3.5 from me as well. I enjoyed it enough to go back and re-read it for the details I'd missed.

A solid 3.5 from me, too.

2.5 for me. I enjoyed the concept but wasn't too enthralled with the roughness of the swim. Sometimes I felt I was trying to breast stroke my way across to
Dog Island and wasn't getting there fast enough. I know most of my friends I'd recommend it too would curse me due to the quibbles we've discussed.

I gave this to my dd to read and she returned it after several abortive tries to get into it. As we say, "courses for horses" meaning it's all
about individual taste.
