I saw Inkheart on the in-demand movie list, and thought I'd enjoy it.
We ended up at Rudo & Cursi yesterday, a Mexican movie about siblings who play soccer. It had a great feel of Slumdog Millionaire to it, but in a way it was more realistic. If you get a chance to see this, it's worth it.

Just finished watching Anne of a Thousand Days. I kept wanting to yell at Henry VIII - it's YOUR "fault" you're having girls, you jerk!

Just saw Time Traveler's Wife with the dd and friends. Once I got over being mad about how different it was from the book, I got into the story and cried a
lot anyway. Warning! If you go see it, be sure to have tissue in hand before the movie starts.
And the ds and dh went to see District 9. Ick! Exploding heads and flying limbs. They said it was so gory awful that it was funny. It's a lucky thing that we had a ds for the dh and a dd for me, huh? Sandra |

I've recently gotten hooked on Netflix instant movies. Saw Hopscotch Thursday night and Green Mile last night. It works really well (although I had to
adjust my screensaver for the first movie, as it kicked in during the film!).

They have a pretty good selection Jodi, don't they? Lots of foreign and independent films too. I watched Little Voice with Michael Caine as a sleezy as
only he can be, Brenda Belthyn as a desperate, over the hill, loud mouth, man eater (cringingly great performance) Ewan McGregor being sweet, and Jane
Horrocks, fascinating as Little Voice. She's pretty amazing. It's one of those little films that surprise for a pleasant evening.

Was Little Voice a real-life person? Was she a singer? someone with no voice? trying to figure out what is meant by little voice...
Sandra, I'm one who didn't like the book TTWife so don't think I'd ever watch the movie. But maybe I'd go if I'd never read it. What did your dd think of it? It is nice of you to have had one of each for you and your dh. Good thing you planned it that way. LOL Iris is here on dvd but I haven't had time to watch it yet. |

Little Voice is what her mum calls a 20-something girl who is almost silent almost all of the time. She listens to tons of records in her room--Judy Garland,
Shirley Bassey, Marilyn Monroe (from Diamonds Are a Girls Best Friend), etc. Her ability to sing like them is uncanny and Michael Caine, as a sleazy talent
agent, latches on to her and thinks she's his meal ticket out of the bottom of the heap. And ... as they say, therein lies the tale.

We've been hooked on ROME, an HBO series and have season 1 on loan from friends. Disclaimer: It is violent to the point where I spend at least part of
every episode with my eyes covered and the other part with my eyes wide open for the sex part (and loads of total nudity). It's pretty plain how life was
lived in ancient Rome, BC and they haven't put any of it in "twin beds" so to speak. It's definitely NFM nor for youngsters but you sure
learn a ton about Roman history! It's an easy way to learn it, much easier than the dry history books from HS. It's also totally addictive and we watch
two episodes every night and are eager for the next night's fare! There are twelve episodes in the first season and probably the same in the second season
(also coming from our friends). We're only up to 9 (only watched one on the first night). The characters become like family right up until they suffer some
dire consequence! But we're loving it!

Jodi, I like the Instant Watch too, especially since we have a tendency to order movies and then let them sit for months and months. I loved North and South,
the Elizabeth Gaskell movie, kind of like Jane Austen with more of a message.
Betsy, funny you should mention that about the violence in Rome. Last night, on our way home from the movies, I was doubting myself about letting the ds watch those awful R-rated movies with all that sex and violence. I worry about the kids becoming desensitized about violence, etc. For years, I have tried to keep the kids away from it but have lightened up a lot with the second kid. Then I thought a bit about the violence of life in history, with wars and lion-fighting and bull-fighting. So it's a gamble but I have to pick my battles. The place I draw the line is in our home. For his birthday, all he wanted was permission to play first-person-shooting video games, and even though I am not sure what they are, I kept to my rule that there are no guns allowed in the house, even in the video games. So he goes to his friends' houses to play... Oh well, I can only control so much, right? Sandra |

Betsy, add a "moi aussi" to the ROME recommendation -- but your right, it's very "in your face" as that's how the Romans lived.

We've been hooked on the HBO series Deadwood. We talk about the characters, the history, the cinematography, and I cannot get the theme music out of my
head. I supposed it doesn't hurt that we have taken western vacation this summer and last summer, but I think we'd like the series no matter what. I
just have to not slip into cussing. :)

Jenn, just seeing the trailer for the first time I thought, "What a perfect person for the role!" Glad to hear she lived the part for you. If the
Julie part is skippable maybe I'll wait to see it at home....

Tres skippable, IMHO... Amy Adams can't carry Meryl Streep's proverbial jock strap - same way I felt about her and Frances McDormand in Miss Pettigrew
Lives for a Day. Maybe I was soured because I didnt like Julie from the book (does AA *always* play self-involved ubertwits?), but I'd definitely say wait
for the DVD and ffwd until you see MS or Stanley Tucci (again, MAJOR rock factor as Julia's husband Paul)

I'm reading J&J now, and totally agree....Julie is not likable, and I'm having trouble finishing. Just not enough of Julia and the ever irreverant
Paul.
Went to see Harry Potter the other day, finally. DH liked it more than me, but it did follow the wonderful history of the Potter movies with the great scenery and total character involvement. I just think it was the most subdued of all the movies; maybe I was responding to the increasing dark nature of them, but I did prefer some of the previous movies to this.
