It seems like G Brooks has a problem with endings, I felt that People of the Book had a weak ending. I know many people who really
didn't like the ending of Year of Wonders because they didn't think it was believable. I did think it was believable. Most of friends said they
didn't think a woman of that era would really have traveled that far. But I feel that many people don't understand that humans have been traveling
since they could walk and people did indeed start lives a new in distance lands.

PBee, I would have to say A Year of Wonders is my favorite of G Brooks novels, also. When I first read it I, too, thought the ending was unbelievable
but I've since read other things that make me see that it's actually quite plausible. Of course, the entire book was something of a fairy tale in a
way. But I thoroughly enjoyed it anyway.
I would rank People of the Book second of her novels but my favorite of her books is still the non-fiction Nine Parts of Desire: the hidden lives of Islamic women. BTW, I don't even remember the ending of People of the Book How pathetic is that?

Dagnabit...now I have to read A Year of Wonders. Arrgh, I'm either going to have to win the lottery so I can quit work and read all the time or stop
reading these threads (yeah like that's going to happen!)
Currently reading: Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel
Just Finished: Nine Dragons by M Connelly **** |

I can't begin to tell you how many times I've had *exactly* the same thought in the past few weeks.

"Will read books for money"
Now that's something I've wondered how to manage all my life. Too bad they don't really use proofreaders any more. Too bad in more ways than one, actually.

They do still use copyeditors--sparsely--if you can live on $10 a day LOL Sad that I went into nonfiction instead of fiction when I hit that fork in the road,
but fate dragged me over the line.

Jill, it's not a joke. Not sure when I'll get to her book and I'll probably just read parts of it to get a flavor for her writing.
Sandra, thanks for the words on the DG. I have been really impatient with some of my reading lately so who knows? a long book may settle me down or....it may not. |

The library emailed me with a list of my reserves waiting to be picked up. Now on the shelves -
Wolf Hall - Hilary Mantel Her Fearful Symmetry - Audrey Niffenegger The Monster in the Box - Ruth Rendell Fever in the Bone - Val McDermid That's added to the ones already there, including 'The Joy Luck Club' for my f2f group. Good thing next weekend is a long one. Wolf Hall is huge!!

Barb, I had Her Fearful Symmetry waiting for me too but turned it back in because the reviews here and on Amazon have been lukewarm. There are too many other
books on my pile to read something that might not be great. Let me know if you think it is worth the time.

Sandra, I've seen some of the reviews and I feel a bit the same way. If I get to it I'll give it a go but I must admit I'm not a bit excited about
it.

When Jane panned it that was enough for me; I don't really need anything else on my TBR right now.

to help me be healthier)
Personal Days by Ed Park (I think this was one of the books mentioned in the Give/Get list - compared to the show 'the Office' ?) The Slide by Kyle Beachy Water Ghosts by Shawna Yang Ryan |

Picked up a copy of Wishful Drinking by Carrie Fisher at Costco the other day. I remember really enjoying her Postcards from the Edge years
and years ago and thought this sounded interesting.
Who knows when I'll get to actually read it... Olle, Personal Days was on the give/get list, from Janice Lee. I want to hear what you think of it.
