All things Books belong here (other than our reviews of ones we've read ) Spotted this morning on Shelf Awareness, a follow up to In the Woods by Tana
French The Likeness The haunting follow up to the Edgar Award-winning debut In the Woods Paperback in June Tana French astonished critics and
readers alike with her mesmerizing debut novel, In the Woods. Now both French and Detective Cassie Maddox return to unravel a case even more sinister and
enigmatic than the first. Six months after the events of In the Woods, an urgent telephone call beckons Cassie to a grisly crime scene. The victim looks
exactly like Cassie and carries ID identifying herself as Alexandra Madison, an alias Cassie once used. Suddenly, Cassie must discover not only who killed this
girl, but, more importantly, who is this girl? A disturbing tale of shifting identities, The Likeness firmly establishes Tana French as an important voice in
suspense fiction.

I had that one out from the library in hardcover right after we finished In the Woods but someone here had already read it (Jodi, I think?) and none of the
prior mystery was cleared up so I didn't bother reading it.

The ad on shelf awareness was for the release of the paperback. The hardcover has been out for quite a while I think.

Right C, the paperback. I had forgotten that someone had been disappointed in the follow-up book. Brain like a sieve but it makes life fresh everyday LOL.

Too funny, Jill.
My ARC of The Angel's Game arrived via UPS this morning. Can't wait to start (right after I finish my current read) but I'm concerned about forgetting *everything* by the time we read as a group. Anyone else concerned about that?

I didn't read the In the Woods follow up, but I think I saw a review somewhere saying that it wasn't worth the time.

I'm trying to hold off on Angel's Game for that very reason and I enjoy it so much more when I read with the group.
I still have the Lisa See too.

Saw this on NPR's website today:
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=103869541 So, I thought, well this dude certainly picks things he thinks "should" be on a top list. Wonder what my friends at book bunch think really belong there?

Well, my initial reaction is this guy has NO personality at all. That list could have been printed off any library list, don't you think? What's
distinct about his taste? Kathy, I think you hit it on the head, it's a 'should' list. Yet he described it as books that moved or
influenced/affected him? who is he? anyone know his claim to fame?
A list of 100 leaves a lot of room for flavor, doesn't it? I'd probably want to keep mine private having said all that LOL

I couldn't agree with you more, Kathy and Jill. There's not a thing about it that strikes me as truly personal. It sounds like a college admission
suggested reading list. I also probably wouldn't want to post my own favorites for perusal and criticism. It would make a great target!

A definite 'should be' list. Clearly the guy never reads for fun, Pfft!
Ya know, it would be hard for me to put together a Top 100 list ( even a top, um, 30 list) since so much of my reading is just for *FUN* not really edification. Or whatever that word is... :)

I agree with you all, that is a list a school would put together, not a list by a self proclaimed "I am not a learned or prolific reader of novels. My
taste is probably medium-brow, male and parochial in many ways". Who reads Babbit or The Jungle by choice? Ha HA.

At the risk of being mocked, I have enjoyed many of the titles he listed. Haven't read them all, but of the ones he listed there weren't any I'd
roll my eyes over and exclaim, "Silly goose, what were you thinking?" My only off the top of my head criticism is that the list is rather dated.

I don't think you would be mocked, there are books there that I also have enjoyed, I think though too many of them are standard required reading though,
especially coming from an "average joe".
I loved, Heart of Darkness, Joseph Conrad The Forsythe Saga, John Galsworthy The Big Sleep, Raymond Chandler Charlotte's Web, E.B. White Howard's End, E.M. Forster and The Maltese Falcon as a movie- never have read the book. |

YUP I agree PBee. Sherry, it's not that they're not respectable, even enjoyable (some)--it's how unoriginal. Your own list would probably give an
impression of your taste or particular interests, rather than literary wallpaper. Especially since you have some distinct interests (like storytelling).
For instance, anyone who knows me can guess at some of the countries and ethnicities that would be represented, that certain genres would have to appear. I bet that's true for many of us who have reached age 40 or more; just by virtue of how many phases we've been through LOL. Now that might make a more interesting list for people who know each other, shorter but more telling: what genres would have to appear or what characteristics?

like when I visit my mom and go through her books, mystery, mystery, mystery, joke book, list book, and another mystery! My book shelves are mostly history,
historical fiction, fantasy, hm.......maybe the best book for me would be an historical fiction with a touch of fantasy!

Maybe you should try one of the alternate history SF authors (like Harry Turtledove).
