06/09/09 11:47 AM	Olle- how interesting, I checked Wikipedia and and she did it several more times, I'm thinking of checking out her book if it is still available. She ended up living in California. "Between 1909 and 1975, Alice Huyler Ramsey drove across the country more than 30 times." I have driven across this country twice, in current times and let me tell you that is one LONG road trip! Especially through Utah, yipes, is that boring! Sorry Utah folks, I know there are lots of of cool things about Utah but some parts are just plain boring. Also, on this day (my BD) Nero's wife committed suicide (who could blame her?!) and then he himself did 2 years later. Jaques Cartier discovered the Saint Lawrence Seaway. Donald Duck made his debut. Micheal J Fox and Johnny Depp share this day with me, not bad company I must say- would LOVE to have dinner with them! Yummy. Think universal translater and death day people allowed. Thanks for looking up more info on that woman, she must have enjoyed driving. I mean after you do it once, why would you do it again and again unless you liked it? Jill, maybe Pb will let us know if they took the train back. I know I'd want to. Congrats on your LT choice. I know Rema likes that author. Speaking of LT, did you see they know have "collections" where you can break off books into various areas? It said it has been in beta testing for months. After doing it a slow way to start I finally read their FAQ's and hit the lightning bolt to edit 100 (?) at a time by checking a box and moving them into my mystery/thriller/suspense collection. I took that collection out of my comparison books. Now if I look at a weighted library it no longer takes me to the Dick Francis fans and other mystery libraries. Not that I'm not interested in finding those books/folks but I was more intriqued with finding other books that aren't in that genre that I might like to read. Thanks LT! Olle

06/10/09 01:27 AM	Question: A friend recommended Peter Lovesey and I see he has an older series and a newer series. Does anyone have any advice as to which one to try? Do they need to be read in order? I finished Death of a Red Heroine today and I enjoyed it well enough. It took me awhile to get used to his style, which felt choppy and stilted but then again just might be the style. Also, all the poetry was a bit distracting in the beginning. Still the cultural and political observations were interesting, even though the mystery wasn't very hard to figure out. I might try the next one. Sandra

06/10/09 05:30 PM BCC ZEN Bookie MASTER	Interesting article in the local paper the other day about the Adams County Library district giving up the Dewey Decimal System in favor of the retail based WordThink method of organizing books. There are two articles, neither terribly long, if you're interested in more details: Adams Library Checks Out New Book Filing System (which is the shorter of the two) and Adams County Libraries Shelving Dewey Decimal. I'm wondering what the librarians among us think of this. My non-librarian opinion is that it's just asking for bigger confusion. I don't see any intrinsic difference in the organization between a library and a bookstore -- just that the signage is different. And there are some libraries that have the word 'History' printed under the sign indicating the 900 series on the end of the rack. But if ALL history is just jumbled together, ...? Of course, I'm not a browser in either a library or a bookstore so I use the organization of items differently. How about others? 06/10/09 07:03 PM	Personally, I find the bookstore method easier for me than the library method and I use both- although I' am adaptable. There is one criticism I do have about both and that is: all titles are on spines and are meant to be read when the book is lying flat on its cover and yet both places store books with the spine vertical so you have to cock your sideways to browse the titles. This is ok if you know exactly what you are looking for but when I'm just browsing my neck gets stiff. That's just me though. 06/11/09 02:36 PM	Right now I'm listening to an interesting interview on NPR with Elmore Leonard. I had no idea he was the same guy who wrote "3:10 to Yuma" which has been made into a movie twice. He says he hates the ending of the new one, saying they "just didn't get it" in reference to what he meant as the meaning/purpose/drive of the story. Love the honesty!

Interested in the fact that the subject is Crime in Ancient Japan.(Fiction I should say) 5.Having read all of Robert van Gulik's Judge Dee books (Ancient China) this looked a good series to continue with and by the way this one is going,that is absolutely right. Jill, I copied the above here for you as it mentions one of your fav genres. The answers are to q's someone started a thread at LT with. Didn't know if you'd read the author mentioned or not.

I've heard of the Van Gulik books but haven't read them because I had the impression they were kind of cartoonish, but that's such an unfair impression without trying them. I guess I figured Charlie Chan. ETA: I just looked it up on Amazon and it does sound good. Here's part of the booklist summary: the first Sugawara Akitada novel, a rousing, whip-fast story of political intrigue and adventure in eleventh-century Japan. Akitada is on his first assignment for the Ministry of Justice, investigating the disappearances of imperial tax convoys. He finds himself set upon by bandits, rogues, and--worst of all--shifty politicians.
