ok so McElvey has departed centre stage leaving behind pills similar to those found in Angela's stomach. Have these two been involved in some kind of drug
deal gone wrong? Whitey has become alarmed and ended it - but why? It has to be pretty disastrous for suicide.
The Big Cat of Lifford is an intriguing sub-plot, and is it necessary to the overall story. Ben goes out to assist with stalking the cat, then returns home to find his own dog shot - but I thought he had secured it in the shed.... An interesting twist is revealed - Mary Knox (the lady in the photo placed near Angela's body) had an affair with Costello many years ago - seems he has decided to drop charges for some 'favours' - not looking good. This Mary Knox had two children, a girl and a boy, was Angela the daughter and Whitey the son? Too early to say, although he purchased her the gold ring. What is Ratsy's role in all of this, and the Powell 'intruder incident' - something fisy there - heaps of revelations twists and turns in this section, lots to think about, but nothing is gelling for me yet. |

I still have no real idea and not much new to say. Could the perp be someone we haven't even met yet? Or maybe Costello is just an evil dude...
And what is the role of the Powells in this story? The lurker at Thos Sr seems connected to the one at Devlin's, but maybe not.

Just finished Chap. 12 and forced myself to stop to post thoughts. Ok this might be wishful thinking because I don't like the Powells and because I'm
presuming all pols are crooked, but I think the Mary Knox disappearance and the current doings have to do with the elder Powell. Did the guy who drove Mary
that last night (Ratzy?) work for Powell? Was he delivering her to him? Given the timing (-25 yrs), I'm figuring it's the elder Powell, not the
younger.
Unless the ring is a ruse, and not really related to Angela's death, there has to be a connection, especially as the photo of Mary was left at the scene of her death. But what the heck is the connection to Angela? Was her death actually an accident? Or was Powell Jr houndogging with Angela and/or her girlfriend and left the ring and the photo as a warning not to investigate too closely or Costello would be outed? That seems pretty far-fetched doesn't it? I dunno. Now I'm going to read the guesses above me and hope for a simpler solution. Edited to add: Chris, I was trying to work something in about Mary's kids too, but I can't figure the timing out. Didn't they say she disappeared in 1978? Oh and WHY doesn't Devlin just ask Angela's mother who the heck the father was? Geeeesh. I think the whole dog, car-bombing thing is a red herring about his crazy neighbor, but not sure about the latter since the other guy died and had his a car set on fire too.

I'll admit that all I know about solving a crime comes from books and tv. that being said I was surprised that the cops didn't take all the cards and
notes left at the place where the body was found. What if one of them was from the killer? And they let the ring go home without checking it for fingerprints
or other forensic evidence? Just don't believe it. And they keep saying she was washed, hello! the cops are told there had to be someone else in the car
when the dude was shot, yet not a thought that she was washed? The only thing is that I don't know that the timing works out for her to have been in the
car, I think too many days had been between them. So that could be why it hasn't entered their heads.
This is a shortish book but there are a slew of people in it. Too many for my head to handle, all wandering in various directions with ties to each other in a number of ways. I'll admit I'm not really liking it. We'll see how it all ties up (or doesn't). |

After Whitey died, I started to think that he and Angela were Mary Knox's son and daughter.

They could be her children. Mary must have been with lots of men, and in such a small town, I am sure more will come out about that. Maybe she was pregnant.
One woman can disappear, but two children? Harder to hide, where were they?
I agree Jill that there is something fishy about the Powells and it seems plausible that Mr. Powell could have been with Mary. Now going to finish while I eat breakfast.
