Another death; we heard that Billy Mays of the LOUD informecials has died also (not a good week!). Curt said that he was going to leave his caps ON ALL DAY IN
HONOR OF MR MAYS! Shhh. Maybe not.
Well Tom! You look so handsome and to use an old-fashioned word, positively spiffy with a boutonniere and all! Congrats on surviving the move and opening your new digs.

Not only another death, but I hear that he was 50, turning 51 next month just like M Jackson. Was it true that he was on a plane that had an incident
yesterday? Like a bad landing or something that shook them up? So little news other than stuff about Jackson was on today, I haven't turned it on in
forever.
I know he was a major pop icon and great entertainer, but the endless coverage when nothing new could possibly happen for a while seems a bit crazy. But then again, so does so much of endless coverage of almost anything that goes boom. Signed Cranky in VA.

Just looking at the forecast for London and noticed that it's going to be close to 90F or 30 C for the next five days--going to be quite the challenge for
Wimbledon.

Seems like the site was down last night, unless I'm the only one who had trouble getting in. A lot of online companies seem to have settled on Sun night as
maintenance time--I guess that's almost as good as the middle of the night.
I can't believe next weekend is July 4th already. Anyone have any grand plans? Life is really speeding by, faster and faster. While they're working on global warming, could they take a crack at slowing things down just a tad? I'm getting whiplash.

I had trouble last night also................
Jill- you are funny. Our little town figured out years ago that they got a deal on fireworks if they had it on July 3 sooooo...that's when we celebrate, weird but it works for us. We'll just do the usual BBQ. |

The last 25 years the 4th celebration has always been at the college. This year it has been cancelled. The local bank has been one of the sponsor but they
were bought out. So sad. It was a big deal, everyone would get their spots the night before and the families would show up around 4. Of course you knew
almost everyone. Scott is talking about seeing friends in Santa Cruz so I guess it is just me and a book. lol

90º F especially with the high humidity in London will not be fun to play tennis in! Thanks, Tom, for the heads up!
Interesting thing here in Tucson: since the city is nearly broke, it was deemed wisest to cancel the fireworks that cost in the neighborhood of $25K to put on so guess what? The money was donated by various interested businesses so the show will go on as the saying goes. However, many concerned citizens (such as the Blanchards) feel that with the fire danger so high, fireworks by their very nature seem to be very risky. Does that stop the show? Silly question! From our patio, we can watch no fewer than three separate fireworks demonstrations, only one put on by the city and the others by hotels etc. One year, the fireworks weren't the only game in town! The mountain range in front of us was on fire and made the show in the sky pale in comparison! Let's hope that doesn't happen again!

I'll never understand the kind of thinking that concludes donating money to fireworks is the worthiest use of those funds. HELLO? Kids are starving and in
need of health care, and clothing, etc etc. But shooting off fireworks for an hour is a better choice? Shame on them.
Sorry, it just gets me nutso.

Because it's FUN! And makes the children (young and old) smile.

Oh, geez, my reply disappeared... I said:
I agree with Jodi. This year, for the first time since 1993, there will be no big BBQ and no fireworks at our house. Hubby and I are tired of the way things have been going on the 4th in recent years so I bought tickets to the baseball game instead. We'll get our fireworks there.

Wait, you guys agree that charity applied to fireworks is more beneficial than using the same money to feed kids? Let me think about this---food--a
smile--books vs a smile? hmmmm. Nope, I stick to my non-guns.

I don't think those are charity $ going to fireworks but advertising $. And in the corporate mind, the two rarely cross, let alone meet.

I agree with both- charity money should go to really worthy things first, like needy kids and I also think that companies think of their fireworks donations as
'advertising' money.

Hmm, apparently Yuku agrees with Jill (it ate my post).
It IS likely advertising $, rather than charity $ going for this. They're just using the sponsorship as a way to build goodwill and make people smile. Heck when Macy's was under bankruptcy protection, the judge inserted a clause into the final agreement which required that 1) Macy's continue to hold the famous fireworks display every year and 2) that they hold it on the East River. What I do object to is things like Citigroup using our bailout money ($400 million) for naming rights to the new Mets baseball stadium. I'd much rather they used it to keep rank and file employees employed.

I'm not a sports fan but I think it takes away from sports when the stadiums are named after corporations instead of the old fashioned names, IMHO.
