I tend to agree with Jill on the fireworks issue. There were two sides represented in the newspaper regarding this. Curt says that in the general scope of
things, that's not too much to spend to acknowledge our patriotic side and that there are literally thousands of families lined up to watch the free
entertainment. Of those, many can't afford anything and this is free for them to enjoy. As I said, two sides to the story. He isn't the sort of
rightist patriot with a flag on his bumper and he doesn't care to be mistaken for one, he pleads.

I agree with Curtski; in the grand scheme of things, $25 K isn't very much and it's certainly true here that tens of thousands line up to see displays.
Of course, there are plenty of privately sponsored displays in a city this size; to my knowledge, the city doesn't do one on the 4th.
And I also agree with the naming rights thing. Here in Denver the issue was put to a vote and an overwhelming majority voted to pay an extra tenth of a cent or something in tax to keep the name Mile High Stadium. Uh, no -- they sold the name to Invesco, a company that no longer even exists, and decided to do something else with our tenth of a cent. Don't even know what it was anymore...

Wow I had no idea I was stirring controversy. I saw it as fundraising=money donated to a cause and I would have rather a cause that benefitted the needy on
more than a momentary basis. Didn't mean to play the July version of Scrooge. But come on guys, you know how many books $25,000 would buy? How many
families could be fed? How about lining up to watch kids smile at those events? I'm sorry, I just think we have our values skewed here toward entertainment
and instant gratification. I love watching fireworks, but I'd rather buy winter coats etc. Which reminds me, a few years ago we did some charitable
contributions of our own, donating to the Native American tribes (pre casinos). Should we do another project for the newly homeless or clothing for those who
can't afford interview clothing? Instead of cash, which many of us are short of, we could raid our clothing closets or find a way to donate our plentiful
books? You guys are great at coming up with ideas--how about it? We could aim for Fall--let's not wait for Christmas when everyone finds a way to give.

Jill, I don't think that anyone disagrees that those are worthy causes but I also see the point that there is no way that this $25,000 would go there.
There isn't a choice here for these people. The money goes to advertising for the company OR the fireworks. For the families watching, it is the fireworks
or nothing, not a choice of fireworks or food. Unfortunately, this is the reality of the choice. We don't prefer entertainment over the welfare of the
needy; it isn't our choice.
If we want talk about how we spend our money, how about the millions spent on the salaries of athletes or entertainers? Should we really spend money on music or art when we could donate the money to a food bank? How about the billions spent on space exploration? That last one was a topic of discussion for a forum at the kids' school. Is it really worthwhile to spend on space exploration when there are so many needy people? What a great discussion topic for Independence Day! Sandra |

Yikes...here's what Bets posted originally:
Interesting thing here in Tucson: since the city is nearly broke, it was deemed wisest to cancel the fireworks that cost in the neighborhood of $25K to put on so guess what? The money was donated by various interested businesses so the show will go on as the saying goes. However, many concerned citizens (such as the Blanchards) feel that with the fire danger so high, fireworks by their very nature seem to be very risky. Does that stop the show? Silly question! From our patio, we can watch no fewer than three separate fireworks demonstrations, only one put on by the city and the others by hotels etc. So it's not all or nothing and I'm not suggesting the world stop doing business. I saw "The money was donated by various interested businesses" and made the leap from donated to worthy. I'm not the grinch for goodness sake. And I wasn't making a global comparison. Just a reaction to those key words. Didn't realize I was so out of step.

I would point out that there have been stadiums that have carried corporate names for a long time--e.g. Wrigley Field and Busch Stadium come to mind but I
really am not wild about the whole naming rights thing--one can look at St. Louis and San Francisco and see what happens when stadiums end up undergoing name
changes simply because the corporation disappears. In St. Louis it is football as they had to change the football stadium from TWA to Edward Jones since
American took over TWA years ago and in San Francisco they have changed the name of the ball park as AT and T took over the old Pacific Bell.

Jill, you're not out of step, but I think this is a common discussion these days, "Where should we put our money?" We all know that corporate
banks having extravagant parties and meetings is bad, but how about fireworks or art shows or the like? Your hot button might have been fireworks versus the
needy; mine is the exorbitant amounts paid to single individuals, like CEO's or athletes or entertainers.

Dollars for the space program? Absolutely worth it. It gets kids interested in science, it helps us gain knowledge (boldly go and all that), not to mention a
partial list of the products that the program has produced:

On the one hand fireworks are just entertainment but on a larger scale I think they help bond communities. It's the one day of the year where all the local
nationalities and income brackets join together with no thought of culture or what makes us different. It's the one day that makes us focus on common goals
and common pride. I love the fireworks but I also love sitting at the riverfront surrounded by thousands of happy Americans. Without the draw of the fireworks
that just wouldn't happen. I don't mean to say that it isn't important to help with food banks and clothing drives and such. (and I do help through
girl scouts)

Along the lines of money badly spent- Yippee! Madoff got 150 years! Let that be a lesson to other greedy people out there. And, no, I don't feel sorry for
his wife either.
The thing about the clothes is- have you ever noticed how many organizations are now asking for 'new' clothes and 'new' toys donations? I understand why but it does seem a little odd, especially since so many things people give away are next to new except for the original packaging. When I was little girl I remember getting my older cousin's case of Barbies and stuff and being VERY happy about it. I didn't mind that that they were used, I just loved it anyway. |

There are too many Debs here! I think Karen was responding to my question regarding spam in my book chat mailbox. I wanted to know if anyone else had gotten
any. Is that right or were you talking about something else?
My local Goodwill is not accepting toys anymore. I think it is in part because "we" have become a society willing to sue at the drop of a hat. All the food the high school cafeteria throws out for just that reason. Then again, my dh sees a lot of furniture thrown away. It seems that companies can't claim it in their tax write offs if they give it away. It makes me so sad. All that waste. |

I see that now, yup, too many Deb's. My mom said when she named me that Debbie wasn't that popular (she named me after Deborah Kerr). In my high school
Algebra class there were 4 of us.
Seems like it would be a simple tax law change to let companies write off donations....it is a shame that so much goes to waste. |

I don't know how old you are but I don't know a single Deb under 40. It must have been the name of the year. My mother had wanted to name me Misty
Harbor (?!) so I am VERY happy with Deborah!

Oh my, Misty Harbor, that would have been tough. I was born in 1960. You're right I've never noticed anyone under 40 being a Deborah. My daughter's
ex MIL and her best friend's mom are Debbie's too. But nowadays there sure a lot of Kaitlin's (or some variation of that). The other thing is, a
lot of the Deborah's I know also have Anne for a middle name.

Debbie, no weird email in my box here either. Sorry you were spammed.
Why don't companies give their used furniture away? lawsuits! why do banks which foreclose on a property not let nonprofits take the furniture out of the houses before they trash everything left there? lawsuits! As far as why groups are asking for new clothing? I've heard tales of what comes in when people donate their used goods. Trash, moldy clothes, dirty clothes, it's utterly disgusting. Granted some people give what is asked for, gently used clothes that are clean. But it's the people who give the other stuff that have led to groups asking for only new items. I talked with someone who works at our local shop (like a Goodwill store but it's not) and she said sometimes what they pay for trash pick-up far outweighs what they take in in sales.

Not too many Debs named after Ms Kerr imo. That period in time was totally gaga over Debbie Reynolds and the Tammy movies and those two names hit the
mainstream. Thank goodness you didn't get that Misty Harbor tacked on you, Deb!! Yikes! And when I was born, every girl had either Jane or Anne for a
middle name. Later on in the "Jennifer" era, every girl got Marie for the middle one and then we had the big Jessica era. You're right about
Caitlyn, Kaitlyn, Katelynn, etc. What about the Hayley, Kaylee series? I'm sure that someone here has a Jennifer, a Jessica or a Hayley? Nothing wrong with
any of the above. Names have always gone in waves. What's happening now? My neighbor has a 2 yo named Adelaide! There's one that hasn't shown up in
a couple of generations!
