Anyone else reminded of trips to Diagon Alley when you're reading about The Cemetery of Forgotten Books? Frankly, I don't see where this book is any
darker than most of the Harry Potter books. The evil presence just lends suspense and atmosphere for me. I'm only up to the 130s though.

I'm not that far yet but this book is kind of reminding me of Aunt Julia and the Script Writer.

Oh, I haven't read that---is it a good reminder of a book you liked?

Yes, I enjoyed Aunt Julia although it's more of a comical story and it takes place in Argentina in the time of radio. I think a few others here have read
it.

Thanks to the kind generocity of Mary I have the book! I was still #59 on the library so I know I would never have gotten it in time. I've read 100 pages.
Much faster pace then Shadow. So far so good.

Welcome back to Barcelona Deb--happy to have you on the Gaudi tour. And on your left, possibly the Gaudi house that David can see from his tower.

My daughter went to Barcelona with her Spanish class in April. She came back with all kinds of Gaudi pictures. Beautiful!

I'm not very far into reading but something in the early part reminded me of The Magus by John Fowles. Interesting that it reminded PBee of another novel.

Go to Google Images and put in Gaudi Barcelona for a whole bunch of stunning images of various sites he designed. To me, he's the Escher of architects--I
look at them and can't believe they're possible.

Wow! I want a Gaudi house. They are so magical looking, so different from our traditional boxes. I always wanted a box seat window in my room when I was a
girl. I remember the day when my dad explained to me that architects designed houses from the exterior in instead of the other way around and I thought,
"but we live in them not out of them so they should be designed from the inside out".

Curt made a video slide show of Gaudi's work when we were in Barcelona two yrs ago. We stayed across the street from one house which is now a Gaudi museum
(Casa Milo). The rooftop sculptural effects are strongly suggestive of Star Wars armies. And the cathedral!!! La Sagrada Familia (the sacred family) was
started in 1877 and Gaudi started working on it in 1884. It's amazingly contemporary to today's architecture on the "new" side. The other
side is quite gothic. The interior is still totally unfinished even after all this time! Oops. Sorry! I could go on and on but I've said more than enough
already. I haven't even received my book yet but I keep on reading this thread anyway.

As I recall, David mentions La Sagrada Familia in the book several times. I remember thinking that if wasn't for Betsy, I would never have heard of it
before let alone have an idea what it looked like.

Jill, I LOVE that house! Ever since I visited Barcelona (for one day) and got to see La Sagrada Familia I've been itching to get back there to have a look
at all Gaudi's other works......... I absolutely love the pictures of them. Like a magical kingdom.

When I googled the Gaudi images my tongue was hanging out. One of them was so surreal, I wasn't quite sure what i was looking at. It was a curving, sloping
roof with windows in it I think. I'll have to go look again. I didn't want to use up too much bandwith by posting a bunch of pics here but they're
worth googling...amazing.

Is it the one with the circle windows? It is awesome. I was just thinking, did any of you see the Casper movie a few years ago? That was a cool house too, kind
of reminds of the Gaudi one with the round circle windows.

That might be Casa Batllo that you are talking about. If you want to see Curtski's pix of that Casa and other Gaudi buildings and Barcelona city pix (which
include some Gaudi photos), you can see them at:
www.Flickr.com/photos/azcurt/ On the right side of the page is the list of his "sets" of pix and drawings. There is Parc Guell, a public park with fanciful sculptural pieces and building by Sr Gaudi as well as many others. The apt where we stayed in Barcelona was across the street from La Pedrera and it's incredible rooftop collection! The "army" with the masklike faces are chimney-pots lined up there and Curt quite rightly calls them "other-worldly" looking! Do check them out as well as La Sagrada Familia since you say that they are mentioned in the book.

It was Casa Mila but at the angle from which I saw it in a small image, it was even stranger. Such genius, voluptuous architecture!!!
http://www.travelshop.de/kreuzfahrten/hapag/spanien_barcelona_gaudi.jpg Meantime, this book is unbelievable. The tension and pace are building and I find myself gasping every few pages. Wow. Just got to p. 318.

Curt says that Casa Mila was the house across the street from us there, aka La Pedrera (translation: The Quarry as in stone quarry). We swear that George Lucas
must have seen those when he wrote Star Wars. Casa Battlo has windows and balconies constructed from what looks like bones or bone shapes.
