Chris, I know how you feel, usually it's me lagging even though I'm still early. In the spoilers thread we've mostly been comparing time periods
for the two Zafon books and which generation of Semperes are in each of the bookshops. It's still safe to read as long as you squint your eyes in the later
posts if you see the name Corelli. So far, nothing really revealed 'cause PBee and I aren't finished. Enjoy!

Really enjoying this book - I really like Zafon's writing style, and am becoming immersed in the atmosphere of Barcelona at the beginning of the 20th
century.

I'm enjoying this so much that I am tempted to call in sick (or mental health day!) so I can keep reading! Those spoilers are tempting me, but I'm
being good so far...

Kathy, don't be tempted by the spoilers--so far they're mostly about later parts of the book anyway. It will be fun though when folks have finished and
come help us unravel some things.

OOo Pam, I was thinking about you yesterday and wondering where you were and how. Isn't it strange how we're all responding to this book, or most of us
anyway.

My book arrived yesterday and last night, I cleared the decks for it by finishing Sweetness/Bottom/Pie which was terrific btw! I highly recommend it!

Does anyone find it odd that Sempere's son is always referred to as being 'Sempere's son' and not by his name (which I'm assuming is the
elder Sempere from Shadow, right?). There are quite a few references to this 'son' but he is unamed. I'm getting confused, trying to place him.
e.g. in the section where David takes the son for a coffee to a nearby cafe and Vidal and Cristina walk in - 'Don't you think we should leave? Sempere's son said at last.and a little further on... Once outside, Sempere's son looked at me, mortified. Maybe there is a reason for this - it just seems odd, not to give characters names.

You're right Chris, but I think it might be because he is only called Sempere in the Shadow of the Wind when he becomes the father of Daniel. Karen figured
this out, and I think it's that this Sempere (Sr) is the grandfather of Daniel in Shadow.
I posted this in the Spoilers thread, but there's no reason not to post it here: Zafon, in an interview without spoilers, talks about Angel's Game being a hall of mirrors and that each of us will see it through the filter of what we bring in with us. That he's challenging the reader to take part in the creation of the story...stories actually. "Depending on who you are, what is inside of you, the story is going to change." He indicated that Shadow of the Wind is given to us complete--we get to sit back and take it in without having to work--it's from the POV of the booklover and reader. Angel is from the POV of the writer, and thus we get to take part. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7fbYcP_TpIo

Did Sempere have a name in Shadow? I know the son in Shadow did but did his father? If Sempere the son is the unnamed father in Shadow then perhaps Zafon did
not want to name him in Angel either. Having Shadow take place after Angel confused me. I'm not good with timelines in the first place!

He does have a name; it is mentioned; just so infrequently that I can't remember what it is.

Zafon is diabolic; when he finishes a chapter, there's always a hook to grab you and make you continue! I read too late into the night every night, thanks
to his lures!
I wanted to tell you about Ramblas which is mentioned on each page and this is what that is, if you haven't already guessed: there's an area where between blocks in the "chic" area of the city that is a kind of pedestrian mall between two streets. It has wide sidewalks, many shade trees and cafes as well as restaurants to lure the tourists and also residents to come out and "ramble" at night. It has one restaurant where we ate one night that is all glass that resembles a greenhouse. In many of the trees are hung "fairy lights" otherwise known here as Christmas lights and the overall effect is charming. We were warned against pickpockets there which follow the fat wallets of the tourists who flock to the ramblas. Also, Parc Guell is featured in Curt's photos and it's where the Count Guell commissioned Gaudi to build his home. It's where that incredible mosaic lizard is found at the entrance by the entrance and the gingerbready cottage that served as the watchman's hang-out. The arches and the parc have been mentioned in the book so I thought I'd explain.

Thanks for the continuing tour, Betsy. Helps offer some mental images as we read!
The more I read this, the more I realize there is very little I remember from Shadow of the Wind, other than liking it so much. I'm going to have to look for the Cliff Notes....

Kathy, right after reading this, meaning Angel's Game, I re-read Shadow of the Wind and I was utterly stunned! at how little I remembered
of it. I wasn't as enthused about the book as everyone else was but I knew it was because I was reading it wrong time, wrong place. But to remember... only
three things from the book? Too old, that's all it is, too old.
