Aside from which, most folks don't realize just how regulated by the gov't their treatment already is, to the benefit of our health most of the time.
They issue black box warnings when evidence starts to pile up about unanticipated serious side effects; a drug doesn't even become available until it jumps
through all the FDA hoops (another good thing for the most part).
BUT, the insurance companies and HMOs are the devils here from what I've seen from the inside. I've been at or read transcripts from meetings that would curl your hair. It doesn't matter how good a drug is if the managed care folks won't put it on their 'menu' Their focus on the bottom line is frightening. Argh , ok I'll stop. It's just so frustrating and the only bully big enough is the gov't because it's such a huge buyer of drugs and services.

I can agree with y'all about the need for a health plan which covers all of us. I was billed by the Hospital for about $7500 as a result of my fall.and
that didn't cover Fire Rescue, about $300 and also some Drs services. Thank goodness I am covered by Medicare and a very good supplementary insurance that
is provided free as part of my retirement benefits. Medicare, of course does not pay that much, discounted quite a bit. It doesn't seem fair that someone
without insurance would have to pay that much.
However, the city is self insured and switched providers and I think I pay more this year for prescriptions than last. This new company refused to provide Prevacid and insisted that I take the generic. So far it seems to work as well. Jose also gets his drugs thru Medco but his appear to be cheaper as he has another supplementary insurance plan. With all his medical problems, thank goodness he also has good insurance but he pays quite a bit for it. "Make it a rule of life never to regret and never to look back" Fortune cookie saying Rema

Just two of my vital meds cost over $700 while I'm in the @#&%! donut hole! The month of May was an expensive one with my medication
"co-pays" (so called) came to over $1100. Fortunately, I can pay for them but they take an incredible chunk out of our budget and I resent it deeply.
So far, Curt's bills are low but for how long? At this point in our lives, we can only expect more of the same and maybe a lot more! I don't enjoy
taking these meds any more than I like paying for them but so far, I must. Phooey!
I'd much rather take Olle's trivia quiz! Love those things so keep them coming, Olle! PB, I'm so glad to hear that the doc is going to get that ugly tick bit out of your gs! The sooner, the better; it's been way too long for it to be under his skin. Poor little guy! Paint that bathroom and enjoy the new color for whatever reason! It'll give you a lift.

Betsy- I think it would make us sick if we all found what the profit margin was on those meds- I bet it is huge.
Everyone- check out Curt's photos on flicker there's a link in another post, they are wonderful, not just the ones of Barcelona, all of them. |

That Curtski is a talented guy, isn't he?
DebBee -- have you seen his quilt? It's around here somewhere... Here it is! Then go back one page and see Betsy's mermaid doll. But you might have been here when she posted those pics.

I love Curt's art work, especially the one with the Chinese men. So talented and tasteful--and the son of a gun cooks too. As you and I have discussed, you
definitely are being rewarded for your childhood angst Bets. LOL

I don't have it now but know you can get the list for Walmart's $4.00 generic prescriptions. I would simply ask for a copy and bring it to your dr.
next time.

Chris, appreciate the update on your mom. What a worrisome thing, to just wonder while you wait for test results and for the time when the answer will come.
More good thoughts sent your way.
Tonight's a party to celebrate the 4th. My dh made chili (it's in the crockpot already) and I'll bring that dip which has layers of refried beans, lettuce, etc. along with crispy chips and a locally made salsa. I'm not sure chili is a recipe I'd have picked for July 4th but he likes it, he shopped for it, he cooked it and I wouldn't say a word against it. :) As cool as it's been it might be just the thing.

LOVE the background for today. We took a pass on our usual extravagant Independence Day deal today and hubby and I spent the morning cleaning the shed, the
afternoon relaxing and the evening at the baseball game. Which the home team managed to throw away in the 8th inning, drat them anyway.
But, at the start of the game there was this moment... After about a 30 minute rain delay (second day in a row. Since when do we get rain in July?) there's this young man out there singing the national anthem in a normal way, not "making it his own", and I'm belting it out right along with him, as are many of the people in the stadium, and as the last notes of the 'la-and of the freeee, and the home of the braaave' are floating away, there are 3 F-16 fighter jets cresting up over the scoreboard in outfield doing a flyover. I looked around and many, many people in the stands had tears in their eyes. On reflection, or even in that moment, I realize that military might is so NOT what I want my country to be about (although I recognize that many other people in the world think that *is* what we're about). But... everyone singing together -- 49,000 people with hands over hearts belting out the same stupid song (btw, I also think its a bad choice of anthem -- s/b America the Beautiful)... I dunno, it had great effect. And the fireworks at the end were *exhilirating*! Great day despite my stupid team *giving the game away in the 8th inning*! Arrrgh!

Chris, for some reason you post shows up as a blank box, so I missed the update, but hope your mom does well.
Olle, I didn't do very well on your quiz questions. I need to brush up on my trivia skills. I have been very lucky with my health. I rarely need to see a doc. That's a good thing because I haven't had health insurance for about 14 years. A doc I know once said to pay attention when you are in line at the post office. If the govt runs health care, those are the people who will be taking care of you. It was a joke, but possibly a scary reality. Went to the fireworks with some of my grandkids last night. Fortunately we were back far enough that we could see, but the booms weren't too scary. The crazy thing was that they played the Ohio State University football song. What does that have to do with Independence Day? Seriously, I live in a crazy town when it comes to college football.
