I've just started reading this and am only a short way in - but I'm liking 'up-and-away' Gwenni so far, she's a bit of a non-conformist with a delightful view of her world...

Is this set in modern times? Gwenni seems awfully young for 12+ I've only just gotten into it, but I thought she might be 7 or 8 at first. Anyone know?

It has an old world feel about it -not sure of time period. Gwenni is 12, there is a reference in the early part of the book, to the age difference between
her and Bethan.

It is set in Wales in the 1950's I believe. I have read the first 50 pages and so far, so good. The 'voice' of Gwennie is charming.

Thanks Jane, the 1950s makes sense of her innocence. Glad you're with us on this one--what the heck are the 'faggots' from the butcher she keeps
mentioning? Sausages or something?

faggots are sticks for the fire. I think the slang for cigarettes came from this. Maybe the faggots from the butcher are bones for soup or dogs?

Faggot (food)
"A faggot is a kind of meatball. Faggots are a traditional dish in the UK,[1][2] especially the Midlands of England.[3] It is made from meat off-cuts and offal, especially pork.[3] A faggot is traditionally made from pig heart, liver and fatty belly meat or bacon minced together, with herbs added for flavouring and sometimes breadcrumbs. The mixture is shaped in the hand into balls, wrapped round with caul fat (the omentum membrane from the pig's abdomen), and baked." From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Maybe TMI? lol

Ugh, no wonder Gwenni's tummy turns at the thought of faggots. Thanks Mari.
I'm having a problem with Magda too (that's Gwenni's mum, right?) Too much of a narcissist and at Gwenni's expense. It's all about her, with no concern for her daughter. Way too familiar. Btw, "nain" is pronounced 'nine'--not as fancy as I'd have thought. I love the way they have so few last names among them that they have to identify them by some characteristic: like Mrs. Sergeant Jones.

Yes I loved the names also, Mrs Edwards the Bank and Mrs Davies Chapel House - an easy way to remember people's names.
Methinketh Magda has alot of baggage yet to be revealed and her stance is more for self-protection, although it is annoying the way she is always putting Gwenni down, calling her 'quaint' and 'odd' and criticising how she walks. I love it when objects are animated (there's a name for this and I can't remember what it is) - the 'distemper in the walls' and the hard stares and facial grimaces of the toby jugs - my grandmother had a full set of toby jugs of varying sizes, sitting on her mantel piece above the fire, I remember being mesmerised by them as a kid, their big fat rosy cheeks.. If I hear 'faggot' being used down this way, it is generally in a disparaging sense.

Yep, Magda's Gwenni's mam. I'm at a point. in the book that I'm a tad sympathetic to Magda's past and of course I've got empathy for
those with emotional problems. Still doesn't make me like her, lol. And yes, she's just AWFUL to Gwenni. IMO, Gweni's got to be pretty tough to
have the self esteem she does living with a mother like that. Magda actually reminds me of a "real life girlfriend's" mother ... Perhaps
that's why I dislike her so. I saw firsthand what emotional damage that can do throughout a daughter's life. YAY GWENNI!!!
& Ditto on the names in the book :)

Funny, I also was going to comment on Magda's incessant putting-down of Gwenni - so horrible! Why do you think she has the shakes? Is she ill?

Maybe she's a drunk.
Clueless since I haven't actually started the book yet. Should be able to do that this evening.

..or its the onset of Parkinsons lol
There must be something major that has happened in her past for her to have such pent-up anger agaisnt Mrs Evans - after all she never even went with Tada and Gwenni to give condolences. Why, I wonder if she was spurned by Ilfan in the past ??? |

Didn't she have a 'thing' with Ilfan while her husband was away during the war? That was the conversation Gwenni heard through the wall. She must
still be flirting with him, which I took to be the reason she was trying to squeeze into that corset to go to church; once she heard that ilfan had taken off
and wouldn't be there, she gave up and said she'd wear her old outfit and got very distracted. Why is Gwenni's dad so accepting of Magda I wonder.
What does he know about her mental state that we don't?

Hey Karen, did you notice how the 'nice cup of tea' solution in times of stress appears in this novel?
I thought of you particularly when I read this on page 113: '"What you both need is a good cup of tea" he says. :0)

LOL Jane, isn't that everyone's solution and social smoother? The Airth I'm reading is set in England and I'm afloat in tea, as the characters
are in all British books. I feel for the policemen who have to drink a cuppa at each house they visit--they're kidneys must be screaming Enough Already!

Jane, I did notice! And remembered our earlier conversation. But I must confess I shudder a bit when they're adding milk to it -- especially milk
that's "turned". I don't think I know of anywhere in the US where people use milk in tea.
