I am going to give it a 3 also. I enjoyed reading this book, it was a comfortable read with all of the crap that is going on in the schools.

2. didn't like any of the family, only liked the cops and the cook. hard to really like a book if I dislike most of the characters.

I'll give it less than 2 since I still don't understand the ending.?

2 - didn't like the way we the readers had no way of coming up with the answer, lost credibility for me when N turned out to be the most
un-credible cop ever and that family were so extreme in their total unlikability. I wanted to get to know St Just more too. |

1.5 from me, reduced from a 2 since I'm not sure it was worth the time. Barb put it best saying that the family was extreme in their total unlikability.
That's not usually a requirement for me -- that the characters be likable -- but these people were horrid!
And I thought the resolution was a cheat.

Whew I'm not alone. I would have given it a 2 as I was reading it, but a 1.5 when I finished because I really felt cheated and manipulated. I kept
expecting it to be worthwhile and then thud. It felt like she was being way too clever and trying to pull an Agatha Christie without laying the proper
groundwork. Phooey.

My rating is 0 because I became bored and didn't finish, too many other books begging me to read them.

It's really a pity since it could have been a good read but turned into a dud as Jillster said.

I am glad I am not alone in thinking the solution was a cheat. I totally lost interest in the book once I found out N. was a cop. I do have to at least be
interested in one of the characters to like a book. These ones weren't even worth it to hate. 1.5

I'm going to swim against the tide and say 3. I thought of it as a send-up of the genre and laughed at the names and typecast characters, rather than
taking them seriously. However, I do agree that the ending wasn't "fair". We had no way of seeing what was in that photo.

Jodi, I don't disagree that it was send-up of the genre, as you say. But does that mean *everyone* has to be supremely horrid?
The author has another one out in paperback, Death of a Lit Chick and one coming in January. Do we want to try her again?

When I first finished this book, I liked it but the more it "marinated" in my mind, the less I liked it. Will someone tell me about the name
"Ruthven"? I've never heard that one before and it's very strange, isn't it?

I didn't think it was too bad overall, she caught the upstairs/downstairs flavour quite well and the characters / setting all seemed to fit in a way. (rich
daddy, petulant squabbling siblings etc), but there was little in the way of clues to grab on to and work with to solve the murders.
2.75. I googled 'ruthven' - more in use as a surname than a christian name in the UK - e.g. Ruthven Castle, Lord Ruthven.

Thanks, Chris. I should have done what you did (duh) and googled it. It just jumped out of the story at me and seemed strange and out of context but perhaps I
was the one out of step.

I'm going to go with a 2. It started off very strong for me, but the more I thought about it and the cheap tricks (like the unfair ending) I pulled it down
to a 2. I couldn't go any lower, though, because I did enjoy the ride even if I thought the people weren't likeable.
