10/15/09 04:56 PM	Karen, in one of your earlier posts towards the end you say something about Louise being a drunk. You mean Ruth, right? I'm sure your fingers typed faster than you could read! I'm so glad this book was finally read because when I read it early I felt like I couldn't say ANYTHING because I was afraid one of you super-smart readers would anticipate the ending just because you were trying to figure out what I meant. I think this book was strong because it was Olivier. Guess I feel sorry for anyone who was sure it was O all the time and then it was. Hate it when I waiting for an entire book for everyone in the pages to figure out what I already know.

10/16/09 02:08 AM BCC BookieMonster	I've been wondering why Louise wanted to implicate Olivier in this way and shuffle him out. I vaguely remember Louise telling us at the last chat that the focus of BT would be on the new people that took over Hadley House - she made a point of that didn't she? Does anyone else remember that ?? I did spend quite a bit of time thinking about them, but it was the Czech, Roar Parra and his son Havoc that I was sure had done the deed. Interesting though, I'm also trying to remember what Olivier was like in the earlier stories - was there any hints as to this side of his character? He was always there in the background, no more or less than any other resident of 3 Pines - but he must have been a fantastic storyteller to instill so much fear in the Hermit to the degree that he (the hermit) carved out his fears. When Gamache arrived back from Queen Charlotte he said that he understood what the carvings meant - but I wasn't sure that he knew it was Olivier at that point, because he went straight to re-interview the Parras (where I thought he was sure to make an arrest!!). There are three types of women in the world -those that understand math and those that don't.

10/16/09 04:16 AM	I'm so glad to have read all your comments - I loved the experience of reading this book - it was a real Three Pines experience and how good it was to get back there - but the ending had me a bit flummoxed. I really really didn't want it to be Olivier and I'm still not wholly convinced of his motivation. I know it was sheer greed but I can't quite see how he thought killing the Hermit and then shifting his body was going to achieve anything - the cabin was always going to be found and the physical evidence of his being there discovered. And like many of you I couldn't see the point of the visit to Queen Charlotte Islands. Loved the way the carvings told the story though. Beauvoir and Annie - they certainly do provoke an extreme response from each other - good thinking on that one. Deb, I agree about Fortin - I would have thought the benefits to him from his discovery and handling of Clara's great art would have outweighed the petty annoyance (to him) of her challenging him about his comments. I would have thought he'd laugh it off or just disregard it. I feel like i need to go back to earlier books to see if I had Olivier all wrong from the beginning or if there are hints about who he truly is - he did some dreadful things in this book that I just can't fit with the 'Olivier and Gabri' picture I had. Ruth too - why the poetic persecution of Beauvoir? Lots to think about.... Barb

10/16/09 07:45 AM BCC ZEN BOOKIE COOKIE Administrator	In one of the earlier books Olivier displayed his greed by getting his hands on a table or desk or something he knew was worth a lot from one of their friends. I can't remember whether it was as early as Still Life or the book where another townswoman died. But it seemed to be a quality that was just his flaw--didn't know it would be fatal. Did he kill out of anger--as well as greed--because I can't see him deciding to just kill him as a plan. Fortin--was it his inflated ego and sense of himself and power maybe? I think he was totally pissed by her standing up to him--the nerve of her--and maybe he thought she would come crawling? I loved the whole book except for not wanting it to be O.

10/16/09 04:11 PM	I wonder what all this means for Three Pines too - there was a passage with Clara, I think, that got me thinking as I was reading it - I need to go back and reread it - where she was thinking about how her life would change with the showing of her work. Her quiet and secluded life would change completely and I wondered then with the changes for her and Peter, and now Olivier gone what all this would mean for the Three Pines we know and love. Although this book has introduced some great new characters - Old Mun and The Wife and I like Dominique and her mother-in-law, I think. I liked their rescue of the horses. In fact that was the reason I didn't think that family was involved in the murders - I didn't think Louise would save those horses and then destroy their new home - and yes, I do know that is the most illogical reason to discount a suspect but it's what I thought anyway LOL. And Peter's art - what's with that? It seems he's either lost what he's always done or he's off on a new tangent - whichever it is he's keeping it very quiet. All the secrecy as he stains his fingers with paint in order to make Clara think he's still painting - the man is so sneaky and underhanded! Barb

He may have been greedy and unscrupulous but that does not mean he would have the rage needed to bash in that man's head. Morin did it! He joined Gamache so no one would question him. The next book will reveal all! Meanwhile Gabri and I have to go visit a prisoner.

I hope Peter is going to find some new aspect of his work or he's going to be a total pain in the butt. Why Three Pines would be changed if Clara is successful I'm not sure; the spa might have more of an effect, if it lasts. Notice how much more interesting Louise's women are than the men, other than Gamache? She needs someone in town who is male, interesting, and will stay alive and out of jail. I love that her characters are three-dimensional with flaws and annoying facets to their personalities--so much better than the cardboard cutouts we usually get to read about. But it also means they're at risk, darn it. Once upon a time, I fell completely in love with a carving from Africa--a huge free-standing tower of Babel in that gorgeous African wood. At the time I didn't think I could afford it, but I've regretted not getting it for the last 30 years. I think it was only $500. So when L described the faces and attitudes in the carvings, my head went right there.

That's the problem with hidden posts -- I don't read them carefully enough before hitting the reply button then don't see them again. I'm going to try to get my face group to read Still Life for January if no one has read it already. We tried a Who Dun It? exercise earlier this year with a book that turned out not to be a Who Dun It. That way I can re-read Still Life with purpose ... or something like that. I'm not even sure what I mean by that so if it doesn't make sense, you're not alone. Barb, I liked Dominique and her MIL, too, and completely understand your reasoning! Louise started winning awards from the git go and suddenly had all these tours to go on. She underwent amazing changes and I wonder if she's going to build some of that in for Clara. But then again, if she tours in the general area, there are more murders for Gamache LOL.

Despite extensive search no trace of the missing amber treasure has been found. Most probably the boxes with The Amber Room burned down during the fire of the Krolewiec castle in April 1945.

11/23/09 12:16 PM BCC BookieMonster	Well I finally caught up with you guys on this one. The posts above mention most of my same reactions. Desperately did not want it to be O. One thing that everyone seems to question is why include the visit to the Charlotte Islands? In addition to it being fun for Louise, it was also mentioned that seeing the totem poles there made Gamache realize that each section told its own story but there was also a larger story that is seen when the sections are combined. So it got him to seek out the other carvings and put them together to tell the whole story which probably led him to realize that the little boy was O and unraveled the rest of the story. Didn't he? Courtney, you came up with the best explanation so far for including the Charlottes, imo. She always gives us something to think and wonder about.
