I've read a lot of westerns, mostly by Louis L'Amour but a scattering of other authors as well so this didn't read too far off the mark as what I'd expect from one.

Those varying characters Kathy mentioned were reminding me of another author but that name never came to mine. Jonathan Carroll? Terry Pratchett? someone with a nicely twisted way of turning things and bringing characters in and out.

So, a love story? Brotherly love that is.

Had to almost laugh at how rock bottom was written for them -- money taken twice (by Indians and women), guns gone, Charlie had a hand taken, cabin trashed, stash of money gone. Charlie had to have his gun hand taken for him to ever decide to do anything else.

For those of you who don't like the Sisters brothers, never fear. In every western I read, when there's a man who is known for shooting well, people come along to draw against them so they can kill them and then be known as 'the man who killed....'. So, odds are, before a year or more is out.....

a couple of bits I kept -- after meeting the boy who kept getting hit on the head part of the advice Eli gives him is to 'buy the biggest hat you can find, that it might cover up your head.' Later the book says:
He stood there weeping and watching us go, while behind him Lucky Paul entered and collapsed the prospector's tent, and I thought, Here is another miserable mental image I will have to catalog and make room for.

On their entry into San Francisco:
"...I am happy to welcome you to a town people in morons exclusively. Furthermore, I hope that your transformation to moron is not an unpleasant experience."
