Normally, at this time in the schedule of things, we’d be opening a new thread for nominations. But… Jodi and I have found the past couple of rounds of nominating, voting, and scheduling pretty depressing, to say the least. It’s hard to see it from where the rest of you sit, but there is a certain amount of effort involved in what we do and given the lack of participation (which is only getting worse, never better) it seems we’re just wasting our time.
We understand that there are lots of reasons for people not to participate: busy with jobs, busy with kids, never wanted to read that book in the first place and, of course, there’s that good old reader’s bill of rights. Not to mention the problem of coordinating between members who are library only and those who read certain books the minute they’re published and then can’t remember enough to participate. But the bottom line is that if no one in a book group wants to read the books the group picks, then there’s really no book group.
So, we won’t be putting up a nomination thread this time and there won’t be a new schedule of group reads. We hope that everyone will continue to post in the other threads, particularly What We’re Reading Now and Chat, and that we can all maintain a connection through those.
We could go back to having group chats that aren’t book specific. If anyone wants to do that, please take charge of that activity and post an announcement!
And if anyone else has ideas for increasing participation and wants to take this on, please do! We’d be thrilled to see life breathed back into this group.
