0.5 The only reason I finished what I did of the book was so I'd kind of understand what the rest of you were talking about when you talked about it.

Thank goodness for book discussion, always opens up another view for me.

I'll give it a 2. I was drawn in by the characters but not by the story. It was an effort to finish.

And from the other end of the couch, I'd give it a 3.25. I loved the writing and it left me with lots of images and thoughts about sylvia's "condition." Only drawback was the slow start through section 1.

Has it occurred to you how lucky we are that our particular addiction happens to be socially acceptable?

Jodi, I think it was worth the read, in the end. I found the first section very tough going (and I think most others did, too) but I really enjoyed the middle part and the final section.

I'm going to give it a 2.25 (hair splitter that I am). I'm glad I read it but, given the difficulty I had with the first section, I can't imagine who I might recommend it to.

I'm just about finished finally and will give it a 3. It fit my mood at the time but I can see giving it lower if my mood were different.

I'm giving it a 3.5

I really felt some understanding of where each character (maybe not Mira so much- too secondary I suppose) was coming from throughout the story. The imagery was magnificent: Sand in the corners of the stove, holes of a flu being punched through the moon of the mural. The snow. The paintings of the burning ships.

Will definitely recommend.

I'd have to give it at least a 3, with some extra +'s for keeping me up all night. I always pat myself on the back when I finish a book for group, but usually it can be hard going... this one just swept me along. I definitely would reccomend it to friends and am waiting for copies of other books by author to arrive at library - so another +.

A solid 3/3.25 from me. Liked it a lot but not a WOW! book. Loved the writing.

Even though I rated it lower, I'm actually glad that others (Courntey, Meg and Jeff) have rated it higher. The writing alone deserved a better rating than I gave this book. I think it's all about what Courtney said about mood...
