I'll add my rating, a 1.5. Just wasn't my type. It felt like required reading for high school and I just couldn't get myself to appreciate it for
what it was.

This is a tough one to rate. I didn't finish it, and found it aggravating, but it is well-written and tells a powerful story. Unfortunately, the
story wasn't one that I wanted to keep reading! Rating 2.

Out of respect for the writing, 1.5 I guess. I didn't finish it, by far. As someone mentioned in the thread, I just didnt want to spend more time with
these angry uncomfortable people.
Contrasting this with The Invisible Man is an interesting exercise for me, because I was totally absorbed in that one. When I was uncomfortable there, it was because I agreed with the main protagonist about how prejudice was making him feel/act. In Baldwin's book, I couldn't bear anyone. |

I rated this yesterday but don't see my post. Did Yuku eat it? Anyway, a 3 from me.

This gets a 1.5 from me as well. Writing was very good, but it jumped around a bit, and I just couldn't get into all the woo-woo church scenes.

I found it difficult to read but I think it gave me an insight to a different culture. I give it a 2.5

As far as civil liberties are concerned, Benjamin Franklin said it best: "They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety." |
